Cyndi Lauper and Basement Jaxx - My worst nightmares are coming true

I hate to say "I told you so", but Cyndi Lauper's union with dance producers always sounded like a bad idea to me. Well, here is her track with Basement Jaxx. See what you think.

Yeah, I know the beat's good and it's aimed at the clubs, but damn, it's like seeing Carole King going techno. Hopefully, this is just a one off for the clubs. Hopefully.

I do not think this is very off, to be honest. Cyndi's always does something different. Ermmmm, unusual?

I love how they worked this track.

Dude, she's not even singing. I like to hear her sing. smile It's brilliantly produced and it'll work well in the clubs, but this is not a product of Cyndi Lauper the songwriter, and that's what I want to hear. Cyndi the songwriter. This is funky, but it's not a song. Now, if it's just aimed at the clubs then fine, but this is not what I want to hear on the album.

I think this "song" is unlikely to end up on the album. Here's another new song which Cyndi's been performing for the last 9 months that almost certainly will. "Grab A Hold" was written in England last April. There's no official version in circulation yet, but there are plenty of live versions. The song kicks ass and is much more what I expect. Ignore the audience chatter and see how this compares.

There is good dance music and there is bad dance music. I wouldn't listen to this.

Exactly. I like dance music and I think it's fair enough if Cyndi wants to make a dance record. But this is bad. It's not a song, it's just her ranting over a mindless beat with no melody. It's not like Madonna or Kylie who record dance music but as songs with a melody and decent singing.

Well, the purple heeled bastard knocked my sound off line in my PC during a DDos Attack. Once I get it working, I check this out online. So far, I've like most of Cyndi's remix singles in the past.

Yeah, this song is pretty sucky barf If Cyndi wants to do a great dance album, she needs better producers and perhaps some songs with an actual melody.

How come when artists make dance albums, they don't go to Jay Kay (Jamiroquai) or JuniorSenior for material? Those two bands are making some of the best,modern-day dance music, imo.

There's no way this is on the album. Cyndi is in Sweden now still writing new material so there's no way she'd be releasing a track this early. It must be Basement Jaxx who put this out. I think the clue to what's happened lies in her blog (yes, that's right, Cyndi Lauper has a blog). She said how she'd had difficulties with some producers in Britain or France last year. She was vague and didn't name any names, but it came down to them not being on the same wavelength. It sounded like she lost her temper with them or something. I'm guessing that might have been Basement Jaxx, which would explain why they didn't get a proper song out of the sessions.

In describing her recent writing trip to Sweden she used the magic word "melody" which means she may be realising where her real strength lies. She writes some of the best melodies as "Grab A Hold" shows.
