THE BAR-KAYS Album "Black Rock" is way way ahead of it's time.

From the special features in the Wattstax DVD, Larry Dodson was right on target with his comments about THE BAR-KAYS album "Black Rock" which debuted his vocals as the lead singer. Hearing this album is plain AMAZING.

Although a thoroughly entertaining album, I didn't hear as much Rock as the title would indicate...

...More like Hard Soul.

nod That was my impression as well. And the thing about is that you know damn well live, these cats can pull it off. They were pulling our legs with the title. Oh well its all good.

Well, this album had a lot of ad libs and guitar solos. If that isn't
rock n roll, what is?
Like Larry Dodson was saying in the special features of the Wattstax DVD, This album was a "fusion of R&B, Rock, and Soul" and at that time no one was doing this combination of genres.
"The Bar-Kays was just the hottest thing at Stax Records"

I'm sure nobody remembers this but I ran a thread on here about this very album some time ago. The album is very cool, I think. Was it some Hendrix type shit? No. Funkadelic? Nah. But it's cool nevertheless. I consider it an "important" album.

The only Barkays Stax material I have is a "Best Of" collection from when they were on the label. I like some of it (not enough to go out and look for their Stax albums) but I prefer their Mercury years by far.

It's actually not that good, imo.
It's alright and all, but like vainandy, I prefer their Mercury years smile

I wasn't overly impressed with it either. To me their standout albums on
stax were cold blooded, money talks, and a few selections from soul finger.
I too prefer their mercury years when they kicked major ass.
