LONG before "1999" and its "electro sound" and LONG before Madonna pushed the SEX envelope, there was BERLIN/Teri Nunn

Berlin were not only before their time, they opened doors and pushed envelopes that others got CRED for pushing. "Pleasure Victim" their 1982 album was the groundbreaker to things like 1999, and thats not where Berlin started, you can trace them back to 1979 with early tracks like "Matter of Time". Teri Nunn was the "sexual" envelope pusher long before Madonna brought it into mainstream. Lets not forget that Berlin were singing about things like SEX,being BI saying Bitch and Fuck all over tracks long before Prince thought of lines that he had on 1999. Berlin deserves its cred for what IT started.

Pleasure Victim is indeed great, and I love its icy synth fog, but 1999 is just on a different level.

Terri Nunn appeared in the 1978 disco film 'Thank God It's Friday'.She plays an underage teen who sneaks into the disco with her friend.

I don't think they ever recorded another album as great as Pleasure Victim, but their 84-86 material does contain several gems, spotty as that period may be in their career.

I think what Terri Nunn and Madonna represent are on two different levels. Terri Nunn is definitely the more sincere of the two, but Madonna is the more outlandish.

Personally, as far as Prince's "naughty" side, I think the only reason we ever got to hear from that aspect of his identity was because he was using those feelings to write an overall story about the good side of him vs. the bad side, and how the good side will win.

madonna wasn't the first to push the sex envelope but, she had the biggest stage

back in 1984 she took a risk with the 'like a virgin' performance and it paid off

i don't think her success should take away from others

teri nunn is still around doing her thing and i think that's great

'Thank God It's Friday' is a hilarious disco comedy that was released in May 1978.It takes place at a Hollywood disco called "The Zoo".It's a Friday night and there's a big dance contest. It's an ensemble comedy, focusing on various characters all trying to have a good time during the height of the disco phenomenom. These days, the movie is mostly remembered for it's Oscar-winning theme song "Last Dance" by Donna Summer, who also appears in the film.I like to watch this movie with 'Saturday Night Fever',it takes me back to that fun, wild era.But unlike 'Saturday Night Fever' (which is sad and tragic),'TGIF' takes a light-hearted look at the disco era. It's pure fun.

This was just a perfect LP, and back in a time when you could do a 7 track 28 minute LP and not have people cry "its too short" "i want 22 tracks and 80 minutes". Recordings and Albums are like "works of art" at least they were, why would you start painting un-necessary things in a painting just to fill the canvas?

My sentiments exactly. Obviously he hasn't heard of prince's 1978 debut
hit soft and wet. What about prince's 1979 album for you and 1981's
dirty mind album. Come Again please! I know of artists who have pushed the
envelope before prince but please stop trying to give a nauseating group
like berlin credit.

I dthink they deserve alot more credit than they were given, which was none. Sorry but i know PRINCE alot more than you think, EVEN longer before his 1978 debut, so jump off that shit, but im tired of credit not being given where it is due, madonna and Prince deserve their credit for their work and input, but lets stop making it seem the world didnt exist till they came into it, or that they started shit.

I agree with u.

For me a perfect album has to be 45 minutes max and 10/12 songs.

I think I made a thread about this once

Love Berlin and Teri Nunn. Totally agree they are underrated. Metro is one of my faves, as is Masqerade, and No More Words. Their tunes totally remind me of junior high...good stuff!

Of course I love the big standards like "The Metro", "Sex (I'm A)", "Masquerade" and "Take My Breath Away", but I also like some of the lesser known stuff like "Pleasure Victim". Now that is icy synth at its finest!

No dude. Calm down. Hell i know of quite a few artists that were doing stuff
before prince that influenced him. James brown, jimi hendrix, hamilton bohannon, and larry dodson of the barkays just to name a few. I want even speak about madonna because she came on the scene about 5 or 6 years after prince.
My only problem with your argument is that you were trying to give berlin
credit for pushing the envelope before prince. Of course there were other artists that were doing it before all of them. I just think it was weak to include berlin in the argument. And yes son i do know the music world existed
long before prince.
