time after time-miles davis i just picked up miles davis' "you're under arrest", and can't get enough of his remake of "time after time"....ya'll think the version that cyndi lauper did with patti labelle and arturo sandoval rivals it any? | |

Haven't heard the other version you referred to.
But there's something about the sound of the Miles Davis horn on a ballad (even at this advanced stage of his career) that's pretty much untouchable. tA  Tribal Disorder

I wanted to like it.
The Munich band seemed kind of disjointed, which intruded on the nice atmosphere they'd established. Miles' "wrong-notes-right" style works on some pieces but annoyed me on "Time After Time," each time. I wanted to like it.  [Edited 3/1/08 14:04pm] | |

Sounds like they're playing counter-points to the harmony as Miles builds his solo back into the main melody. The Patti Labelle and Cyndi Lauper version is my favorite version. It is a testament of their very close friendship. They took the lyrics to a different level.

Miles knew WHO & WHAT he wanted out there with him, man! He didn't want somebody out there throwing "Be-Bop" lick # 45 thru #400 at him?!? Miles heard ALL of that Shit, already!! I know He preferred to have heard me fumbling around with my "OWN" notes ....honestly than to try to recite some shit back at him incorrectly?!?! With No Feel..... I didn't know ANYthing when Miles asked me to join him. I had literally just started playing music, period. And, it was ruff man. I'm not madd at folks who didn't like my contribution to the band at the time...shit I was concerned, too! BUT, I DID start to catch on & before it was over? I was getting in Guitar players asses.....Then I got even MORE haters! Hahaha! Folks don't know that I'M A BASS PLAYER!!! (First & Foremost) The "Lead Bass" is an extension of my Bass shit. So, TRUST..... Motherfuckas didn't want me on BASS back then.... or Miles would've had ONE bassplayer the entire time I was there. TLM: For the bass freaks who like to know all about the technology, can you describe your equipment – bass, strings, amps, effects etc? Foley: I'm sooooo not this Guy .....I use a Fender Jazz (73) And, my "Lead Basses" are customized & created by me. Running thru a Huge Amplifier. That’s basically it. I don't wanna sound like a prick about this kinda thing.... But, a persons "SOUND" is in their Hands.....NOT their GEAR!! TLM: You once said “lead bass is more about a state of mind” Explain! Foley: Well..."Physically" I'm playing a piccolo bass in theory.... But, "Lead Bass" actually lies in my "Mind" My phrasing etc. otherwise I'd sound like I was playing a piccolo bass instead of a guitar. OK, so I just had a full out  moment, when it all came together for me that this was the same Fishbone cat.
And it also was dude who ripped that wonderful solo in Mint Condition's "So Fine." (thank God for wikipedia)

goodness gracious!!! Ahh...it was a temporary fill-in. 
Foley filled in for both Fish and Wood in 93 a few times during Lollapalooza and apparently in Europe too (at least on the barcelona 93 video). Foley was then playing with Arrested Development.

I always wondered what it meant by 'lead bass' in the credits. To me, he was just playing a 4 string electric. Foley is definately a cool cat! and on that note, I love way Miles always hired interesting characters. It's like he was looking for an 'attitude' moreso than 'musical chops'. All of his band members had their own distinct character that added to the respective groups. It's one aspect that sometimes I wish Prince would adopt, instead of constantly hiring professional, yet often somewhat bland, bandmembers.
