Amy Wino, another case of "compared to the sea of trash"...

She looks like Mozart.

Her songs, the throwback image, and everything are cute, but it's just a tribute act. Do people see it and enjoy it for what it is, or do people really think this chick is amazing or even good?

It think part of the reason she has such a bad habit is that she realizes this about herself much like Kurt Cocaine and his crap band. Maybe she feels guilty and would rather get high than I don't know, log onto the org and rant about how she's better than Prince.

She used to be very good. But that was a long time ago before the whole snowballof BtoB. I used to go see her all the time on the jazz circuit for international festivals, when she would be sharing bills with folks like Terrance Blanchard, Herbie Hancock, Jaguar Wright, and a couple times in England when she was more of a soul sistah ruffneck. She was cute, and she had chops. But again that was years ago. Sadly she's a different kid, now.

...and jeez, why don't y'all let the Van Hunt thing rest already, if that is indeed who you're talking about. Damn lol

As much as you like her...who would you rather listen to for an hour

Her or Jag?

Do you really think she's bringing something new or even good to the table? Why?

One could fill a book with what you DON'T know on the subject of music.

Anybody ever hear of a bait thread? If not, here it is.

New? No. Good? Maybe once upon a time in a land far far away.

I don't even equate the Winehouse we see in mainstream music now with the same kid I saw back in the day. For me it's like seeing 2 different people. I'm not into the cariacature she's become for the international pop audience. However, before she succumed to whatever in the hell brought her to this point, I enjoyed her immensely during her jazz era. Primarily because for such a youngin' she had good chops, great vocal phrasing, she understood the use of dynamic with decent mastery of scatting, particulary bop. I don't know if you sing or play an instrument or not, but you probably at least know that scatting is technically very difficult, and I'm always delighted when I see young folks able to tackle this. She also has excellent timing when she does pieces that employ vocalese.

Considering that the work from her that I enjoy most is rooted in the jazz tradition, I doubt she can re-invent the wheel (nor do I expect her to). So it's not about bringing something new to the table where that genre is concerned. Because ultimately it's all cyclical. However, what I do expect of her, as I expect from any serious vocalist I enjoy, is to understand her "instrument" and to be technically proficient when she uses it. I have personally witnessed her manage this quite well on many occasions. Keep in mind again that I'm speaking of pre-birdsnest head Amy lol

Once she's out of her jazz cover territory and the technical mumbo schumbo is conquered, lyrically what I've taken from her personal compositions is pretty simple on a human level, based on nothing more than gutteral response and emotionalism. On Frank I enjoyed her sardonic wit, and on Back To Black I appreciated the writing's sense of vunerability . On both I appreciated the musings (or is it therapy?) of a grossly imperfect, obviously deeply feeling writer who manages to appear as they say "faulty but not broken"... a mutilated individual possessed with an intelligent brain and a flair for poetic flourishes, and a ghost of a body drowning alternately between self-effacement and false bravado. For me my attraction to her style of writing isn't all that much of a mystery. It wouldn't be for you either if you knew me well enough. lol

So with all this being said, you ask me who would I rather listen to for an hour (live). Well I think it's pretty clear that these days it would be Jag...or Lizz Wright, or Maria Rita, or Tomoko Nagashima, Jill Scott, or Janis Siegel...doesn't matter which one, I have no prefeence amongst them. What it boils down to is for me is they have managed to retain their instruments in a way which musically garners an instinctive response in me, although they all gve me something different. However, a younger, physically undefiled Winehouse did that for me too when she first started out... and I'm pretty sure if she was still in peak shape vocally she would have her place on that list with the others, separate as they all are, but equally appreciated by me.

...and with that, your questions should be answered, and Auntie bids you goodnight, dear. Thanks for asking the question though. I like ya better when you stop pretending to be an attention seeking troll and accidentally show us the smarty that you really are wink

Even if she was competent in that scene, that doesn't say much. That scene isn't what it was. I mean I can't stand Jill Scott or the packs of clones. That's another thread though. And as far as there being nowhere to go :smacks your hand: You see what trash like Wino has done?

No, hun, I'm simply not interested in a gibberish contest or flexing my regurgitating skills, but I would like an honest explanation.

Amy Wino is the new Alicia Please.

Who DO you like? Every post I've read by you is talking about how untalented someone is. Do you even like Prince? ONLY like Prince? Just Jacko? What's the deal hon? Even those with...ahem...natural born talent wink like Winehouse and Alicia Keys you have issue with. Who are some artists you like?

While I don't think Amy is neccesarily doing anything brand new, she's probably opening the eyes of a lot of younger music listeners to some of the old school acts who influenced her. Which isn't a bad thing. She does have a unique voice, the type of voice that doesn't get much play on Top 40 radio these days. I'd say she's a breath of fresh air from the generic crap that infests radio ie: Flo Rida, Soulja Boy, any watered down AI winner etc.

I just really wanna know which artists Dance actually LIKES.

Seriously, it must suck to be as permanently negative as you are, Dance.

Just chill, mate, everything's gonna be alright.

I love Amy's voice and a few of her songs, a whole album is hard to get through though.
