Mary J Blige overrated thread

Ok what has this woman done different from other female singers other than steroids. I think she blows in the bad way!! She rips off other songs and they all sound alike. Queen of Hip hop my aunt fanny!!

I have mixed feelings.

She was great when she first started, really part of that first group to pionerr R&B and hip hop together. What's the 411 and My Life are stellar in my opinion. I also like the Mary album. But, she seems to be on autopilot now and if she's kind of a caricature of herself. Her music production pretty formulaic so it's hard to hate, because it's generic now. But, that's the point, it's generic and boring now.

Never really though much about her actual vocal quality/abilities when I liked the songs. She's a decent enough singer, though she tends to overscream.

She's actually the only A-list performer (who still tops the charts) that I genuinely like. I can understand how people are turned off by her "Oprah" antics and "self-help" theatrics, but I find her music consistently good for a mainstream artist. And she doesn't allow her music to get drowned out or disappear beneath all the production work on her albums. The norm nowadays is to work with different producers for a single album. This is also true for Blige but while other artists disappear beneath the clutter of their producers' trend-setting, the technique seems to work on her favor. Somehow Blige's individuality shines through for every album in spite of this.

That is the solely thing that is true about her artistry! She has had much consistent work and productions throughout her whole career and her messages are universal, although they sometimes seem repetitious on each and every album. I am a big MJB fan and I've loved nearly every thing she's done up to this point. Her voice is killer too man!

I agree. While she has basically been doing the same thing for over a decade she still has this uniqueness that stands out from every1 else. How dare they say Keysha Cole is the "next Mary" Heffa please. She cant even do "Love" live right.

Anyway...her last two albums have been really great and I look forward for more. She just needs a new change of style in music.

I've been following her since day 1, and she's very rarely let me down. If anything, she might be a little underrated. She's just about the most consistent mainstream artist out there producing current work.

Is there an artist out-there who isn't over-rated in some way?

she's had a nice long run with a consistent career. I don't like every single song she's put out, but she does have a bunch of good ones that just hit home, and girls could relate to what she's singing about when it comes to relationships. As for merging r&b and hip hop together, I think that when Real Love came out, she alienated the r&b female artists before her who did not survive after new jack swing died down, with the exception of Janet.

I could never stand her and the final straw was when she murdered U2's One and BONO effin' guested on the track too.

That song is just meant to be SUNG not screamed.

I don't think Mary is overrated. It's true that technically, she may not be the best vocalist but I love the raw emotion in her voice and I enjoy her music. I also think she's a great performer. She's so crazy onstage lol, but she really gets into her performances and is never boring, I really like that about her.
