Robyn - Be Mine! (Freshest Pop Artist of 07)

Following on the heels of the quite-brilliant With Every Heartbeat (her first #1 hit in the UK), Robyn released the great Handle Me (#17 UK) and now another truly fabulous catchy pop song, the pulsating, eerie Be Mine! Slightly obsessive lyrics dressed up in dance-pop. Great track, and it just hit #10 in the UK. This is the same girl that hit the US Top 10 with Do You Know (What It Takes) and Show Me Love in 1997/1998.

She also stripped the song down for an acoustic version that is very beautiful.

Robyn's look and quirky spirit remind me of Cyndi Lauper.

lol I had a pretty decent response with my With Every Heartbeat thread.

Anyway, AMG gave her album ****1/2 stars.

Curriculum Vitae, the spoken word intro to Robyn's self-titled fourth album, asserts that the Swedish singer has, among other things, discovered the cure for aids, ‘Out-super freaked Rick James' and won the nobel prize ‘for super foxiest female ever'. It's ridiculous, tongue in cheek arrogance which would probably be faintly embarrassing if it didn't kick off one of the finest pop albums of the decade.

The self-aggrandizement is mirrored on Konichiwa Bitches, on which Robyn raps (sort of) and boasts "I'm so very hot than when I rob your mansion, you don't call the police you call the fire station". Make no mistake, this is worlds away from the Show Me Love days.

The stylistic shift of this record can perhaps be attributed to her choice of collaborators. Expressing dissatisfaction with her previous album Don't Stop The Music, Robyn struck out on her own, setting up Konichiwa Records and funding this record herself. She drafts in electro duo The Knife, dance producer Andreas Kleerup and Klas Ahlund of the Teddybears. The Knife produce Who's That Girl another statement of intent song on which she asserts "Some girls are sexy, like every day, I'm only sexy when I say It's OK". It's a fantastic pop song, as is the Kleerup produced With Every Heartbeat which marries a beautiful, minimal lyric with intense, driving dance beats and the most beautiful string section to be heard on a mainstream pop record since Bjork's Hyperballad. These are songs that could easily return Robyn to international prominence.

Picking out highlights does little justice to the consistent and dazzling inventiveness of the record though. On the mournful Bum Like You Robyn promises "I would knit you mittens and make you pie" while Handle Me hilariously deconstructs an ego driven former lover. There are no tracks on this album which don't stand out in their own right, no hooks which fail to take hold. This is pop music of the highest calibre.

"Be Mine" is pretty catchy. I haven't been aware of anything Robyn's done since "Do You Know"?

Odd look she has there, though. hmm And the little kid is adorable. smile

i liked the earlier video of HANDLE ME better, but the new one of BE MINE is great! the first one did have an Annie Lennox/Tori Amos/Björk quality to it.

Robyn's album was one of my favourite albums of last year- really good pop and she seems such a sweety.
"Be Mine" and "With Every Heartbeat" are fantastic and she sounds like the love child of Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Prince and a Manga Older sister!?!- wow!
I'm going to see her at the KOKO club in London next month- she should be great!

First time I ever heard Britney, I thought it as Bovyn. Haven't really thought about her since.

Great single! Should have been the followup to "With Every Heartbeat", as "Handle Me" wasn't on the same level. It's good to see a pop star with a decent personality have success for a change.
