How funky is The Cell? Whew, this really leaves me speechless. And I haven't even sat down to take a look at the lyrics to fully understand them. I'm all for a more organic sound like 'Mama's Gun' but this is one sounds really awesome.
I'm really, really totally amazed by this right now. Can't believe it. And I'm glad Supa, that it has such a personal meaning for you. I know it's really important sometimes to find someone, some artist, to speak to you. Music is so important, really. This album really woke my eyes up. She did it in a upbeat way too...thats why i love it so much. It is an eclectic sound of funk hip hop r&b and jazz. Man people will sleep on this album definitley because there are no commercial hits; though i know ones who do appreciate it will forever. I am still astounded by: What if there were no niggas And only Master Teachers? I'd Stay Woke. THAT LINE makes me so damn proud that sone1 .. a female R&B artist is saying the things that positive rappers are saying. Although mainstream love to make money off of 'niggas', there is a definite void of positive hip hop music in the mainstream for profit...as I watch Soulja Boy's "Yah Trick Yah" video anyway..back to the Cell now Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I just finished listening and I'm so glad I went back to Best Buy (already supported some great record stores this week) and picked this up. It's amazing. I love "Honey" as a special ingredient. It's a perfect "pop" song taht doesn't fit the album, but sounds awesome. I got to give this another listen soon.

I thought it was weird that Honey was a bonus track till I heard the CD. It made total sense to do it that way. I haven't read the whole thread so I hope no one has said this already but to me, Honey is the desert after you've finished eating your dinner and it's so sweet too! It's the perfect ending to an incredible CD. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Yeah, she definitely stepped up her game on this one, but that isn't surprising since she has always dished out incredible stuff throughout her career. Nu Amerykah is just like a drug. I haven't stopped listening to it ever since I got it in from the mail last Tuesday. This masterpiece of an album just shows that our "analog girl in a digital world" is taking her artistry to a whole new plateau and beyond. What's even more interesting is how the subject matter here are so realistic and deep. Erykah's subject matter this time around is concentrated on social ills, drug addiction, and self determination in the ghettos. She even gives kudos to Minister Farrakhan from the Nation of Islam and the late great J. Dilla on two occasions: "The Healer" and "Telephone". This whole record is hip... NOT. AT. ALL! That way, the next album might actually come out during the summer since they will play this to death until it's time for the new album. Sweet!!! I agree. It's a masterpiece. "Soldier" is stunning. Amazing tune, amazing lyrics - like vintage Gil Scott Heron. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

I cried uncontrollably the first time I heard that song I'm >>>>><<<<< with that song the "dope" meaning other things as well as bad habits I partake of... like she said "I ain't never done dope to cope" but these days, what was once done for pleasure feels like a crutch... or helium to keep me afloat... (I been through a tremendous amount of shit the past 2 months of my life) deep ass song... "what if it was you" I LOVE HER [Edited 2/26/08 19:45pm] OK....That Hump. Since my cousin was killed, there have only been a few songs that have moved the fuck out of me in relation to that event. The very first song I heard after hearing the news that my family had pulled the plug on the life support was Bilal's "Sometimes" I only got through 20 seconds before feeling as if I was going to lose my absolute mind. Me'Shell's "Jabril" spoke to me in the same way because that song is a tribute to those who'se names we shall not speak and my cousin was one of those people that society points at and blames for all its problems. That Hump has sufficently destroyed me. I wrote 2 articles that I feel I must share with this audience. The first article is about my own experience with domestic abuse: http://prince.org/msg/100/114206 The second is about my cousin's death and the lessons that I learned after that first year. Without a doubt it is the most profound event of my entire life. that article is here: http://prince.org/msg/100/220882 While totally destroying me, Erykah STILL brought the healing..... The song transitions and she talks about her experience and she implores all of us to think about this one thing: "What if it was you"..... That was the motivation for both those threads, to get people to understand the bad choices that people make and WHY they make them. I wanted people to understand the whole story so that the next time they pointed their finger at the weak and wicked, they might understand why they are weak in the first place and sometimes unable to make righteous decisions. When you don't love yourself, you never seek or expect others to love you. If you don't even think you yourself are worthy to be loved, you defintitely don't think you deserve that from anybody else. What if it was you? What if? Life is ALWAYS 2 choices. Life is forks in the road. People only know what they know and how can they recognize the beauty of one side of that fork when they have never ever seen it before? Can you blame someone for choosing what they know? Through a series of events that I know as confirmation, I became connected to a group called Heart Centered Speakers and I did my first presentation on 2/13 using both of these articles and I spoke about the power of forgiveness. I made a promise to my cousin that I would live the rest of my life honoring her memory and bringing hope, peace and healing to those in need and being a part of this group is a way for me to fullfill that promise. This song rips my fucking heart out and puts it back stronger and with a divine purpose. I am extremely proud for this to be the official thread where this announcement of my place in this group is made. Sorry that you folks had to wait so long for the next Badu album but she released this shit on MY timetable for obvious reasons And with that my signature has changed to recognize this next phase of mine..... . [Edited 2/27/08 21:08pm] Thanks for sharing those two difficult instances in your life and how you dealt with it all. I found them very moving and inspiring. Uhm, Erykah's new album looks like it has some very deep lyrics. I bought the album, but I am gonna wait to listen to it when I feeling less angry and more optimistic. I loved Erykah's music since Baduizm and I still do.

I'm still getting into it, so all I can say for now after only one and a half listens is that the FUNK drew me in first. I need to load it on my computer cuz I've only listened in the car, turned up pretty loud so that the bass could permeate while driving on the freeway to school or running errands. The music grabs the senses, and the lyrics grab the heart and head. It's definitely deep lyrically, and it's a great progression musically. I didn't know what to expect since I'm not a big fan, but I do own all her releases and probably more of a fan of the 1st one and WWU. The listening shall continue, and I will make sure not miss her on the next tour. Erykah's is preachin on this one and it's surely needed.
