Artists and drugs

Five artists identified in Albany probe join Rambo actor as recent buyers of steroids

First published: Sunday, January 13, 2008

Mary J. Blige, 37

The Bronx native's first album -- "What's the 411?" -- debuted in 1992. Since then Blige has produced seven multiplatinum albums and won six Grammy Awards. In December 2006 Blige won nine Billboard Music Awards for her album "The Breakthrough."

Between August 2005 and January 2007 Blige allegedly received multiple shipments from an Orlando pharmacy of Jentropin, a human growth hormone, and Oxandrolone, an anabolic steroid, in orders sent to her at the Beverly Hills Hotel, MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and Clay Gym in New York City. At least one of the orders was mailed under the name "Marlo Stanfield," which is the character name of a drug kingpin on the Baltimore-based HBO crime drama "The Wire."

Blige's representative did not respond to a request for comment.

Curtis James Jackson III, 50 Cent, 32
Jackson started dealing drugs at the age of 12 in Queens but an arrest on weapons and drug charges and a sentence in a shock incarceration program led him to abandon the street life and gravitate to a career in rap music. The stage name 50 Cent, Curtis has said, underscores his effort to "change" his life.

Jackson is alleged to have received shipments of steroids at his mansion in Farmington, Conn. in July 2006 an order was mailed to his residence under the name "Michael Jordan" and also at a residence on Oakmont Drive in Los Angeles. Steroids in his name also were mailed to the office of a Long Island chiropractor.

Jackson's representative did not respond to a request for comment.

Timothy Z. Mosley, Timbaland, 35
Mosley was born in Norfolk, Va., and began his musical career in the mid-1990s emerging as a top rap artist. Mosley has become a major record producer and two years ago founded his own label, Mosley's Musical Group. The label's debut, Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous" featuring Timbaland, reached the top of the song charts.

Mosley allegedly received shipments of human growth hormone and anabolic steroids between October 2005 and September 2006 at his Miami residence and at the office of a Long Island chiropractor. Mosley could not be reached for comment.

Wyclef Jean, 35
Co-founder of The Fugees. The Haitian-born rapper and Grammy Award-winning musician is a producer and self-described social activist.
Jean splits time between New York City and Haiti, where he has spearheaded humanitarian efforts with stars such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Prescriptions in Jean's name for human growth hormone and Oxandrolone, an anabolic steroid, were shipped to the office of a Long Island chiropractor in August 2005.

Jean's publicist declined to comment.

Tyler Perry, 38
An award-winning playwright, actor, director and producer. In 2005 Perry wrote, produced and starred in the box office hit, "Diary of a Mad Black Woman." Last fall, his television comedy series "House of Payne" debuted on TBS.

Perry's biography on his Web site touts his rags-to-riches story from being homeless on the streets of New Orleans to now owning a mansion outside Atlanta
Prescriptions for anabolic steroids and growth hormone were shipped in Perry's name to his business and studio headquarters on Krog Street in Atlanta in 2005 and 2006.

Perry could not be reached for comment.

While steroid-related scandals most often involve professional athletes, the majority of cases involving steroid abuse are with other folks.

Not saying the accused stars are guilty, just that they're more representative of those who normally abuse the drugs. Normal folks.

Well consider two on this list are all of a sudden "incredible hulk" like i wouldnt doubt the use of hormone growth. Steroids are used for alot of things, not just hitting a baseball further, at times for recovery from injuries, to rebuild things within the body, Jerry Lewis had steroid injections a few years back for health recovery, so who knows what they used them for if they did.

hey, don't forget Rambo.... cool (page two)

Sylvester Stallone, 61

Stallone paid a nearly $3,000 fine in Australia in May 2007 to settle criminal drug possession charges after 46 vials of human growth hormone and several vials of testosterone were discovered in his belongings during a customs inspection. Stallone, the chiseled star of the highly successful Rocky and Rambo movies, was in Sydney for a promotional tour. According to the Australian Associated Press, Stallone said he takes human growth hormone regularly because of damaged tendons and thin bones. Stallone has no known connection to the Albany steroids investigation.

50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, Wyclef, Timbaland Reportedly Named In New York Steroids ProbeSend to Friend

Investigation lists several celebrities among the thousands receiving prescribed shipments of steroids and HGH.

The ongoing investigation into steroid trafficking that has already sent shockwaves through professional baseball is now reportedly looking at members of the music industry as well. According to a report in Albany, New York's Times Union, citing confidential sources, the names of Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Timbaland and Wyclef Jean have turned up in an Albany-based probe.

The report claims that the singers and rappers are among tens of thousands of people who may have either used or received prescribed shipments of steroids and injectable human growth hormone (HGH) in recent years. But law enforcement officials said they don't have evidence that musicians and other customers violated any laws. Instead, the probe focuses on anti-aging clinics, doctors and pharmacists who prescribed the drugs.

Medical experts told the paper that the alleged use of the drugs in the entertainment industry — which is already a human laboratory for anti-aging shortcuts from collagen, fat and botox injections to a laundry list of plastic-surgery procedures — is proof of how steroid use has spread in this country. Steroids and HGH, currently the focus of a congressional investigation into their use in professional baseball, are being illegally prescribed across the country at increasing rates under the misconception that they enhance healing, looks, strength and speed, and slow aging, but experts warn that the drugs can also have serious side effects when prescribed incorrectly.

The Times Union says it gained access to records from several unnamed cooperating witnesses on Long Island, New York, that reportedly indicate that human growth hormone or steroids were shipped to Blige and the others — sometimes under fictitious names — at hotels, production studios, private residences, an upscale Manhattan fitness club and through the Long Island office of chiropractor Michael Diamond. Diamond, who has not been identified as a target in the case or accused of breaking any laws, helps run an anti-aging program at Clay Gym in Manhattan.

Spokespeople for Wyclef, 50 Cent, Timbaland and Blige could not be reached for comment at press time, but the New York Daily News reported that Blige blasted the Times Union story Sunday night. "Mary J. Blige has never taken any performance-enhancing illegal steroids," spokeswoman Karynne Tencer told the Daily News.

Diamond said patient privacy laws prevent him from discussing whom he has treated or why, though he denied having anything to do with athletes. The Times Union noted that it "appears evident" that Diamond does cater to famous clients, as evidenced by the many stars, including faded action hero Steven Seagal, whose autographed photos line the walls of the doctor's office.

The Times Union claims it has also obtained records showing that performers received prescriptions signed by South Florida osteopath Dr. Gary Brandwein, who was named last year as the physician who prescribed steroids to professional wrestler Chris Benoit, who killed his wife, son and himself. Brandwein is awaiting trial in Albany on felony drug charges.

To date, the paper reported that, in addition to the stars and Major League baseball players, the probe has also exposed allegations of steroid use by professional wrestlers, NFL players, police officers, prison guards, top-ranked body builders and people with ties to high school and college wrestling programs. HGH made the news last year when actor Sylvester Stallone paid a $2,975 fine to settle charges in Australia that he illegally possessed vials of steroids and HGH during a customs inspection of his luggage. Stallone said at the time that he needed the drugs to treat a pituitary gland issue.

I saw this on the news last night too. It definitely isn't fake. CNN has also picked the story up from AP:

Paper: Entertainers named in steroid report

ALBANY, New York (AP) -- A number of entertainers were named in connection with an Albany-based steroid investigation, but they are not part of an ongoing criminal probe, according to a published report.

The Times Union of Albany cited unidentified law enforcement officials in reporting Sunday that R&B music star Mary J. Blige, rap musicians 50 Cent, Timbaland and Wyclef Jean, and award-winning author and producer Tyler Perry may have received or used performance-enhancing drugs.

Law enforcement officials have said evidence does not indicate that the celebrities broke the law, but that investigators are focusing on doctors, pharmacists and clinics that provide the drugs.

Albany District Attorney P. David Soares launched the investigation into steroid trafficking last year.

Soares is "not confirming, denying or discussing any of the names" involved in the investigation, said spokeswoman Heather Streeter Orth.

A spokeswoman for Blige denied the singer had taken illegal steroids.

Ken Sunshine, a spokesman for Tyler Perry, declined to comment.

There was no response to calls Sunday and Monday seeking comment from representatives of other entertainers.

Soares' multistate investigation has focused on Signature Pharmacy of Orlando, Florida. So far, 10 defendants have pleaded guilty and news reports have linked some professional athletes to Soares' probe.

Soares has said Signature was at the center of a web of businesses and doctors that illegally wrote prescriptions for steroids. Authorities raided the company almost a year ago and its owners and operators are awaiting trial in Albany on related charges.

Records shared with the Times Union and information from several cooperating witnesses on Long Island allege the celebrities received prescribed human growth hormone or steroids, the newspaper said.

The newspaper said that Blige received the human growth hormone Jentropin and Oxandrolone, an anabolic steroid, in orders sent to her at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Her spokeswoman denounced the report. "Mary J. Blige has never taken any performance enhancing illegal steroids," Karynne Tencer told The Daily News.

Former Sen. George Mitchell released a report last month on performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. That report said former Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski provided steroids and human growth hormone linked to several prominent players. Radomski pleaded guilty last year to charges that he dealt steroids to players for a decade.

Congressional hearings are to begin this month on the Mitchell report.

Yeah, I was guessing Mary was using stuff for anti-aging as since there’s other things she can use to alleviate soreness, especially being a non-athlete.

I do hate how steroid use perpetuates the idea that people who change their physique or are muscular use ‘assistance’. It really undermines folks who work and train incredibly hard to get to where they are. People just assume someone is on steroids without knowing one way or the other.

And while people are in an uproar over steroids in sports and such, how come so little seem to care about its presence in the foods they eat?
