SLANT Reviews TMB
Those wondering how Mariah Carey could possibly top the inane title of 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi need wonder no more. Yesterday it was announced that the singer's 10th album, which drops on Tax Day, will be titled Energy Equals Mass Times the Velocity of Light Squared, or more specifically, E=MC². It's either a stroke of sheer self-effacing brilliance or a sign that Mimi has officially fallen off her rocker. The album's lead single, "Touch My Body," isn't exactly filled with combustible energy and it lacks the full-throttle belting that accompanied the Return of the Voice three years ago, but it features all of the characteristics one expects from a latter-day Mariah track: rapid-fire verses (she slows down only to warn her clandestine lover about his loose lips: "I will hunt you down"), coquettish vocals (the lyrics are racy without being raunchy, so that means no mentions of heavy-flow days, but there is a reference to a sex tape popping up on YouTube), and of course, a memorable hook. There are shades of both "Always Be My Baby" (good) and "Shake It Off" (bad), but "Touch My Body" also harks back to, dare I even say it, Like a Virgin-era Nile Rodgers. Think "Angel"-that is, not a whole lot of bass but plenty of plinky, synthetic-sounding keyboards and bouncy rhythms. The song's biggest flaw is its attempt at hip, pop-culture-referencing lyrics: "They be all up in my business like a Wendy [Williams] interview," she sighs. "Touch My Body" strikes me more as good album filler than lead single material (it's no "Fantasy" or "Honey"; hell, it's not even another "It's Like That"), but it's worth noting that I found "We Belong Together" a little boring the first time I heard it too-and that thing tanked faster than Glitter.

I was listening to It’s Like That a moment ago and I’m sorry, vocally that song is crazy. The arrangement and harmonies is really what made it a good song from a mediocre song.
Please see why Mariah is B. Scott’s diva of all divas... hilarious but true. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

If I remember most on here hated it Its Like That and the song was the nail in career. I heard Touch My Body twice and thought 'ok'..Listened to it properly and on better speakers. This song is like the 'R&B/Pop bubble and bounce' Sister to 'Jill Scotts Crown Royal, which is a hot grinder. and the beat is going to off in the club "The Strip Club that is" (In a good way, lol) She killed it on vocals, phrasing, melody all hot, a lil island flavour in there? It's probably good not everyone is not getting it straight away as Im sure it will be everywhere like a Mariah Carey in 90's record. (This song made me go dig up "The show the After Party The hotel" and some super melodic 90's R&B) oh and James Poyser (Mine Again) is a confirmed Producer!! . [Edited 2/14/08 4:37am]

[Edited 2/13/08 11:35am] Hey, Twink, was wondering where you were. I think people were/are tired of the whole hip hop thing with I Like That but it has a feel good beat that I couldn’t deny and I was sold on the bridge and chorus and the “them chickens is ash and I’m lotion” line. Interesting that you liken TMB to Crown Royal which I love and wish was a full length song. I can actually imagine MC on that melody maybe because it’s not unlike something she would do. I think once she got her "appeal" back to the majority of the country and not just her loyal fans, Mariah really doesnt give a damn at this point, shes going to do what she has always done case closed. I think the media probably will expect this to do MIMI numbers but i think everyone with a "brain" is realistic, and knows that just isnt going to happen, i think if they can acheive half of it they should be satisfied, i think curiousity alone will give her that. I think with MIMI mariah was more tense mainly because if it didnt work, i think she might have gotten cut early, lets not forget this is her last for the label, so she will become a free agent. I think this album is going to be Mariah's very "loose" record, there really isnt that feeling of "if this doesnt sell im done type of vibe with the media either".
So all in all i dont really care about radio and what they play or how and where the single lands, i think now "singles" are for the "kids" and Albums are for the adults, and thats really the way they are thinking FINALLY. But i think with a solid, sexy, mariah-like video, something over the top, the single will move just on that, and really singles sales have always been her strong suit, her airplay with the exception of a few "mimi" songs has not been her "thing" since the Butterfly album, so i wouldnt be surprised if her airplay wasnt there for this record. Actually, you're somewhat incorrect. Since the introduction of the digital format, singles sales have not been Mariah's strength. All of the Mimi singles that hit were hits solely based on airplay. The queens of digital are Rihanna and Fergie, which is why they can even hit with singles that don't crossover to Rhythmic or Urban formats. Mariah will need airplay if she wants to get a hit. Well thats ture but once the "commercial" single was done away with, her fans didnt go the digital route with her, because honestly its a waste since she always puts out import singles and people get those for mixes and things like that, i know labels see it as a waste, but with people like Mariah and others, the elimination of this option was stupid. So i dont really see her having a radio hit for the most part probably something in the 20's if i had to predict, but then again with Mariahs die hard fans they might just go nuts with the digital single this time, but i still see that 99 cent single as a waste for anyone except for labels who make tons on that while the artists get about 2cents off it. Fanbases can't get a single anywhere on iTunes without public support. They don't see how download days are a complete waste. If 5000 more people buy the track, it makes basically no difference in its chart position. If the general public doesn't buy the song, fans won't be able to do anything.

Well that is why i stopped wathing the charts, mainly because of its methods bot being even in the way its counted, Airplay counts way too much and with labels for the most part buying their time, and owning stock in the stations, that whole method of tracking is phony. The general public for the most part is curious about her still, and she obviously is gonna get press, video play nonstop, so the track being good or bad is really meaningless at the end of the day. SOHH Exclusive: Mariah Carey Producers Talk New Album, "It Feels Like It's Going To Be Better Than 'Emancipation'"
written by Janee Bolden with additional reporting by Danica Dow Thursday - February 14, 2008 R&B diva Mariah Carey returns to the spotlight this Spring with her newest release E=MC². SOHH caught up with the Grammy award-winning producers Bryan-Michael Cox and DJ Toomp - who collaborated with M.C. on the project - to get the details on the album that everyone is buzzing about. E=MC² follows Mariah's hugely successful 2005 Grammy award-winning album, The Emancipation of Mimi, which sold over10 million copies worldwide. While that success will be difficult to match, the album is already generating praise from mega-hitmaker Jermaine Dupri, who claims the quality of E=MC² surpasses Carey's last album, and the other producers she's worked with on the album. "I'm telling you she's in a great space, man. It feels like it's going to be better than Emancipation," Bryan-Michael Cox told SOHH exclusively. "She has a lot of the same producers. Jermaine gave her some really incredible records. I came in and gave her some real dope records. She got some really really dope stuff." DJ Toomp, who just took home a Grammy for his work on Kanye West's Graduation, agrees. "It's incredible," he says. "I've only heard snippets of a few songs but Jermaine Dupri, pulled me to the side and was like, 'Yo man, we bout to be here [at the Grammys] next year too.' He's like, 'You're on a classic album and you got a classic song.' So it feels good." Along with JD, Cox and Toomp, will.i.am, Stargate, Nate "Danjahandz" Hills, James Poyser, C. "Tricky" Stewart and The-Dream also collaborated with MC on the project. Carey has already announced plans for a Brett Ratner-directed video for her first single, "Touch My Body," which was written and produced by Carey alongside Tricky Stewart and The-Dream. "Touch My Body" hit the radio earlier this week. The project will be the 11th studio album for Carey, who has finally set a release date of April 15th for the set. E=MC² was executive produced by Mariah Carey and Island Def Jam Chairman, Antonio "LA" Reid.

I wish they’d stopped talking about how hyped they are. I’m glad they’re happy and proud of the work but it sure setting us up for something.
On a brighter side, maybe they’re so confident with the rest of the album they figured the first single didn’t have to be huge. It’s just a light appetizer to whet the palate. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

[Edited 2/14/08 9:38am] Yeah it's doing just fine. Will definitely debut inside the Top 40 at Pop. Placements don't matter, really, it's impressions that do. I don't think this is #1 material at Pop or Urban, though. Rhythmic, we'll see. [Edited 2/14/08 9:48am]

Cool & Dre told MTV News about various sessions they had with the singer.
"With Mariah, one of her favorite records is 'New York' [by Ja Rule], and she asked us to do a record like that," Dre said. "It was like, we got an opportunity to work with Mariah, and she wants us to do something we already did. But we said, 'You know what? You don't get too many opportunities to work with a Mariah Carey.' And to know you have her ear, you got to impress. So me and Cool decided not to do 'New York.' We wanted to show her we could do big pop records too. We turned it in, and her A&R came back and asked us to go gutter instead. So we made the hardest beat ever in history. We had a bunch of rappers trying to steal the beat, and they couldn't believe we made the beat for her. Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes, all saying they couldn't believe we were giving it to her. And then, she ended up taking the first record anyway."
