This is part of the holy trilogy of funk songs that define my funk roots along with Prince's "1999" and Stevie Wonder's "My Eyes Don't Cry". I absolutely adore every measure of this song, and when the mood strikes, it actually brings me to tears. There's just something about that rubbery synth bass that electrifies me every time.

All of those are great too, but "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" is their crowning achievement. nod

One of the Gap Band's favorite songs (after Early in the Morning and Shake). I also love the fact that the 12" version of this song is 13 minutes long.

Nah, "Burn Rubber" is it for me. "Early in the Morning" would be my next fave.

:nods: When R&B was still fun and funky! It's really one of those great funk tracks that manages to slip through the cracks and still get a healthy amount of pop radio play (think Kool and the Gang's "Celebration", only a hellvu a lot better!).

There is a Gap Band 12 Inch Collection CD that has most of their 12 Inches. It is also available on one of the "Phat Trax" compilation CDs.

Hell yes! A few of the songs are just the full-length album versions (like "Burn Rubber"), but most are actual 12" mixes. It would be worth it for the 13+ minute version of "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" alone. nod

The 12" version of Outstanding is an added bonus. The radio edit pales in comparison.

I was more or less showing my appreciation for that song as a DJ by having it in that format, but I could just as easily play my copy of Gap Band III too I guess. lol

The album says "Burn Rubber" is 5:16 long and the 12" says "Long Version 5:30" but I played them side to side at the same time and it's the same exact version from the motor revving intro to the fade. lol

That would explain why it is the same on that 12" Collection CD. I never got that CD but the 12" Collection would be worth it for that crazy long version of "You Dropped A Bomb".
