Can't say anything else that hasn't already been said about the man. I've loved Rick all of my life. Had the good fortune of seeing Rick in his prime during his Street Songs period. Rick RULED in the early 80's. During the year of 81 and early 82, Rick was hotter than Michael. Mike would take care of that shit when he released Thriller BUT in 81, NOBODY could touch Rick. That album was everywhere. Rick was really the next black rock star, since Hendrix. And in many ways, he was the FIRST black rock star to black kids. Rick even reached the white crowd, something Parliament never really did. So Rick was in that rare position of truly having the black audience, the street cred. Which was crucial. AND he had the pop crowd and many of the white rock audiences dug Rick. Rick had a good artistic run from 78 to 81. His albums after that, although he had some jams, weren't as consistent. Drugs and fame, like Sly Stone, had totally caught Rick with his drawers down. Pity really cuz I would have loved to have seen Rick at the top of his game in 82-85. Although Street Songs is his masterpiece, my fave albums by him is definately his debut, Bustin Out and Fire It Up.

thumbs up!

I understand you're a seasoned musician, and a veteran Funkateer, but have you been to a Parliament concert recently? Like in the past 20 years? Over half of the audience is White (at least the shows I've attended in New York and Los Angeles - about two dozen of them before I lost count), and they seem very familiar with the repertoire. I assume you're speaking about back in the day, when P-Funk got very little airplay (prior to the mid-80's).

Yes, I've seen the All Stars 11 times. All out here in L.A. The last time was little over a year ago. That's not counting seeing Parliament in 78. Trust me, I KNOW 90% of the crowd at the All Star gigs were white folks. They resembled a Grateful Dead crowd with white boys with dreadlocks and white girls with sun dresses who was in badly need of shaving the hair from underneath their underarms. Yeah player....I'm hip. At The Paladium, about 2 years ago, I actually watched the show from the side of the stage. Courtesy Blackbyrd, who I'm cool with. I was refering to during the 70's and white folks not post Chilli Pepper white folks.

nod Yeah, the whole vibe has become very "Grateful Dead". P-Funk concerts always take me back, feeling like a teenager in The 70's again!

the problem with 'The Flag' is that every song sounds alike! I can't tell one song from another.Every track sounds like "Party All The Time".

A lot of people rag on 'The Flag', but I love this album. I don't think it's his worse album, I personally think that honor belongs to 'Wonderful', but 'The Flag' is a pretty solid album. It could have been better, but I love it, and the song "Free To Be Me" perfectly sums up who he was, and how stubborn he was. Good album. Worth checking out if you haven't already

Yeah, I can see your point, they do all sound similar at the begining, but I stand by my love for the album. Theres just something about it that grabs my ear.

What do you think about the song 'Forever and A Day'?

Yes the definitive collection is worth buying. As for all his uptempo songs (slow not included) here's a list of his finest and baddest stuff to put on a cd or cds. Take a look at this list:

Give It To Me Baby
Superfreak
Fire It Up
You And I
17
Cold-Blooded
Bustin' Out
Loosey's Rap
Wonderful
Dance With Me
U Bring The Freak Out
Be My Lady
Pass The Joint
Call Me Up
Standing On The Top
Glow
Can't Stop
Love Gun
Ghetto Life

I think that's enough to get you started.

Yeah all good songs. I'll also add "Mary Jane" and "Moonchild" to that list. I especially love the later. I think it's underrated.
"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

This thread has perfect timing. I just started listening to Rick James again about a week ago.

My faves are: You and I, You bring the freak out, Ghetto Life, Cold blooded 69 Times and many more. You should also check out the Mary Jane Girls: All night long, Boys, Candyman and In My House.
