Julian Lennon Appreciation and also some Misconceptions cleared up

The first child born to a Beatle and also during their "mania" period, Julians birth and johns marriage had to be kept a secret during those years, as it was viewed that Johns marriage and a child would make the female fans of Beatlemania go away. Many misconceptions surround Julian, one of the biggest is that he is bitter and has made "money" the target of his fights with Yoko. Well lets clear that up right away, Johns will gave money to both children equally, however Julians money was given in "allowance" terms where as Seans was in Yoko's possession. Next thing that people forget is the smaller things between a father and son, as Julian said he never got to know his dad, early on their was the Beatles and than later his parents split and he had yoko and sean, Julian didnt play into the equation at that point, and more than that, at the time of Johns death, julian and john had reconciled somewhat, but Julian still searched for who his dad was, personal things like drawings, artwork, letters, etc..were things that Julian wanted or at least wanted offered to him, but where did they go, they were sold at charity events, now charity is a great thing, but those "personal" things should have at least been offered to Julian before "selling" them. And guess what, Julian would go to these "events" and buy what he wanted using his own fathers money left to him in the will, how sad is it, or ironic, that he is using his dads money to buy his own stuff back.

But futher than that is Julian the musician/writer/activist which not many people know. Sure there was the instant success in 1984 of his debut, but further than that many people didnt know his work. I think to really grasp Lennons strength would be on the 1998 CD photograph Smile, his first work since 1991 and to date his last full album (his new one due april 2008). It was on "Photograph Smile" that Julian finally said, "fuck you" to critics who always said "you sound just like your dad, just like the beatles" as Julian said "well yes i do, now can we move on in life". There was a time Julian said in the later 80's he would "try" anything to not sound like his dad mainly because he didnt want to hear the critics, and it took him about 10 years to even want to record again because of the early days in the 80's, but when he did "photograph smile" in 1998 he felt he was embracing the past somewhat rather than running from it.

Heres a list of Julians Albums and a MUST HAVE song list

Valotte (1984)
Secret Value of Daydreaming (1986)
Mr. Jordan (1989)
Help Yourself (1991)
Photograph Smile (1998)
Conscious (April 2008)

Must have songs

SALTWATER (1991) the first truly enviromental song, when it wasnt cool to be "enviromental" to bad no one paid attention since all the things in the song came true, also George Harrison's solo (uncredited) is amazing.

The Other Side of town(1991) an eerie look into two sides of a person, excellent song

Day After Day (1998) First single from the Photograph CD, very Beatle like, with a great lo-fi to hifi sound.

Angilette (1989) not sure if its a true story, but scary if it was. Talks of saving a friend from themselves and losing.

Now Youre in Heaven (1989) when it came out everyone said "i sound like bowie, shit i cant win" Julians only number one song, reaching number one on the Rock Charts.

Valotte (1984) Well his first single and simple video of him alone at a piano

I should have Known (1998) one of the best songs ever by a Lennon, this at first hearing may sound like a bitter guy/girl breakup song, but its actually Julian singing about his first manager and warner brothers.

Faithful (1998) one of the most Beautiful songs ever written is all i can say.

"We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F
