...It's probably Oscar Peterson Sings that they're referring to in the story. Once you hear some of the tunes (Romance & With Respect to Nat) are the ones i've heard, it's obvious that Nat King Cole was his vocal model. That "agreement" was a good one for Oscar's sake (his singing is OK but nothing to write home about). But Nat should've welched on that deal and continued playing the piano.

Awesome Trio! don't know if Herb is still around (always looked as if he would play his last note first) but to Ray Brown and Oscar, yeah if heaven has a band.....
btw, i was able to catch Ray on his final tour and at his age he was still doing things to make my jaw drop. Great story.

Oscar was by far The Greatest Piano that I've ever heard ..... bar none. If you guys have the chance, check out his NightTrain album. It's a must have for piano and or Jazz lovers. |

Oscar Peterson is one of those musicians I can just about never get tired listening to. It's really too bad because I still had some remote hope that maybe one day I'd be able to catch him in concert before he died  but I guess I'll just have to take solace in his albums. | |

I just thought i'd mention this.
There was a TV special that was unorthodox in it's approach because there were i believe 3 pianists playing at once. 1. Oscar Peterson 2. Michel Legrand And for the life of me I can't remember the third one. Maybe there wasn't a third one. But this special was AMAZING at how they didnt even trip over each other and clutter when they were doing improvisations on standards. If anyone has any clue where to get that I'd like a copy. I saw it on a music channel "Ovation" a long time ago. I don't think many people caught on to it. I believe it was filmed in Europe. It was professionally shot if that helps. I can stump with ease with something like that. Because I am guessing if you didnt have OVATION you didn't see it! | |

Almost a decade ago, as I left work late one night in Baltimore, I turned a corner downtown and stopped at an intersection. My radio was tuned to the classic jazz station, and I couldn't believe the music I was hearing. Piano playing, both stately and soulful, was wafting through my car. I couldn't believe how gorgeous it was. Mastery was evidenced by nuance at times, dazzling artistry at others.
When it was over, the announcer said: [i]"That was the Oscar Peterson Trio with 'The Canadienne Suite.'" I made it my business to track down a copy of that disc, and I didn't rest until I had it. As I reminisce, I'm listening to Oscar's late-1990s disc with Ray Brown and Milt Jackson, "The Very Tall Band." The man was just amazing. We've lost a giant. | |
