Saw Badly Drawn Boy last night I was lucky to see a special show by Badly Drawn Boy last night. To celebrate his 10th Anniversary as a recording artist he played a private show at The Briton's Protection pub in Manchester, the venue where he played his first ever show back in 1997. It was strictly friends & family by invite only but I was lucky enough to win a pair of tickets in a competition on his website.
The show was in an upstairs room of the pub, very small. It was like seeing a show in your living room. He had a list of songs pinned on the wall with numbers beside them, the songs were played randomly by bingo balls being drawn by his father and wife. Whichever number came up decided which song was to be performed. I even got to meet the man afterwards and he signed a few of my rarities and posed for a picture. A top fella! Btw, he even released a 7" single just for the night. It's limited to 100 copies and individually signed and numbered by him... all proceeds to charity.

Nice! I like him, but the only album of his I've got is the soundtrack to About a Boy.

His first album The Hour Of Bewilderbeast is a classic, I thought About A Boy was ok but patchy. [Edited 12/16/07 17:58pm]

I think About a Boy is stronger overall than Bewilderment. Although once around the block has the coolest wah sound in a long time.
I think he has a ton of talent from the 2 discs I have. You are very lucky to see an intimate show like that since I feel it really helps sell the songs when you can smell the venue if you know what I mean. Music is the best...

Oh yeah, the venue certainly has a unique smell (especially near the toilets/washrooms) And you are right about Once Around The Block, I love a bit of wah-wah!

Badly Drawn Boy is my favorite current artist.
It took me about five years to really get Bewilderbeast, but About a Boy & Have You Fed the Fish were instant classics. 1+1 is 1 was a grower, as is his new one, Born in the UK. The guy's songs are just so deep. They (partly due to his un-dynamic singing style) might not grab you at first but the sincerity, lyrics, melody, arrangement make them damn near standard material. I love that he puts himself out there to the point that you might ridicule him for being so pretentious, yet he's absolutely sincere. [Edited 12/17/07 16:18pm] My Legacy
