It sounds familar and I've probably been there...by any chance is it that one that sells a little bit of everything and is on Gratiot. All those mentioned are really good but have you ever been to Memories and Melodies? It's a gem! It's pretty amazing with a huge selection of new CDs and used vinyls. There is a whole room of $1 records and about two rooms called "The Dance Room" or something with 12" records. When I go back home, I gotta go back there. I like Recordtime (in Roseville....not sure if I've been to the other) but often get sort of bored there. I just got a digital camera and I'll bring it with me next time I go to any of these places. Gratiot actually has Recordtime and M&M within a few miles and I tend to go there. Also, when I was around there last time I looked for Car City (which is close, on Little Mack but I didn't find it). I remember going there like about ten years ago and I think it was Ok then. Yeah, Hot Hits is on Gratiot near 12 Mile. It's completely overhauled and a waste of time now though. I totally know Memories & Melodies. It probably has the best selection of new CD's of all the places mentioned here. And their vinyl and memorabilia is insane. I just don't have a very pleasant experience when I'm in there anymore cuz their staff is annoying and cold. I always forget about Car City. They're another one who have gone downhill. Haven't been there in a couple years. I know what you mean though. It can be tough to find. Not sure if they're still in business. I was going on kind of a record store trek and I basically just drove down Gratiot and I got to Car City at 10 but it wasn't open. I looked inside and frankly it didn't look like a real record store! I guess I didn't miss out on much. I get what you mean about the staff. It's funny because they were kind of nice when I walked in because it was either my first time or first time in many years (I doubt I've ever been there until recently when I just stumbled on it). One guy was being kind of crazy and asking too many questions. he just kept commenting on stuff and talking and I tried to be nice but...I'll be honest, he probably just smoked a fat one! The selection is pretty awesome but when I went into those smaller rooms, I was sweating like an MF. It was summer but it wasn't that hot out. Maybe it will be better if I go again. Car City is still in business because I called about their hours but should have asked where they were located. I just drove up and down and couldn't find it. I gave up!

Sorry for the double post but while I'm here, I didn't know that the place in Royal Oak closed. Actually, maybe there were two? I was there many years ago (more than 10) with my sister and I remember it being very impressive. [Edited 12/13/07 13:34pm]

RipHer2Shreds said: Brendan said: Yes, it's in Uptown. And, yes, it's just across the street from Calhoun Square. But that's not why it's great. It's great because it has a huge selection, will probably exist long after every other music store is bankrupt, and if you've been clicking/flipping for a couple of hours, your hands will start to resemble that of a ditch digger. Unfortunately, its name betrays its actual prices. Very true. But I've given up trying to get both selection and great price. And CDs I think will soon be like records, just not quite as cool -- confined to specialty and/or used stores. Where else are people going to sell back their CDs when they need extra cash as they go completely digital?

They always had insanely great and obscure vinyl. There was a guy there named Nolan ~ a very sweet teddy bear guy ~ he knew so much about Miles Davis, Prince etc. It was great to talk with him and he always dug out the greatest treasures from under the counter. Wonder if he is still there? I used to go to that fabulous Italian grocery/wine store/deli nearby to buy brownies for Nolan as thanks for the secret surprises. Music is the language of the spirit. RASPUTIN MUSIC! 4 floors on CDs, vinyls, cassettes, VHS, DVD, and every genre you can imagine!!!!
Amoeba and Rasputin is the reason the Tower Records barely 45 minutes away had to close down! The Rasputin location near my school in Pleasant Hill also drove that Tower Records location out of town, then moved in Tower's old building! Rasputin is my favorite!! The one in Campbell is very close to me but this weekend,I'm gonna check out the one in Mountain View. It's located in the exact same building that Tower Records used to be in Is this the one you're referring to? I always find alot of cheap vinyl records at Rasputin. They have sections where every album is only $1.00. . [Edited 12/14/07 1:42am]

Truth be told I was stuck in Amoeba's CDs for a few hours and only breezed through the 45s (which seemed picked over).

This is the only record store that sells vinyl in the Jackson, Mississippi area. It's called "Little Big Store" and it is in Raymond, Mississippi. The building used to be an old train depot. I go out there maybe once in several months to see if they have anything different. I don't go that often though because it's a long drive out in the country. The store used to be located in Jackson but moved to Raymond because Jackson has become so damn rough. It's now located a few blocks from a college campus. Andy is a four letter word.

After hearing the conservatives on "The Bill O'Riley Show" rant and rave about "the homosexuals are too bold and have too much power in San Francisco", that city sounds right up my alley. However, combine me and the earthquakes there, we would shake the city up so much that it might separate from the rest of the country and turn into an island like Hawaii.
