Amoeba Music! I go to the Berkeley location regularly: It's the largest music store in California, along with the San Francisco and Hollywood locations I've always wanted to go to this store!! I'm gonna have to make a trip to Berkeley soon.I wanna do a vinyl dig at that place. How is their selection of vinyl? We gotta get Finess to come to the Bay Area.I know a few places that he would LOVE.

It's still there. But Sue isn't. She got bought out and they retained the name. It's a shell of what it once was. Sue was a real sweetheart. I haven't been in there since the turnover. Keep your headphones on.

Hi all,
Thank you for these wonderful pictures of record stores, I love the American store sizes. I would go absolutely mad, I think it is time for me to think of a vinyl trip to the U.S soon There are some good vinyl stores in London but not as big. "Girly Man Man Man..... Kill her kill her kill her"

Yes, it's in Uptown. And, yes, it's just across the street from Calhoun Square. But that's not why it's great. It's great because it has a huge selection, will probably exist long after every other music store is bankrupt, and if you've been clicking/flipping for a couple of hours, your hands will start to resemble that of a ditch digger.

Record Time in Roseville and Ferndale ~ The Roseville store once had a contest to see who could be rudest to the customers And, Neptune's in Royal Oak ~ tiny tiny and the staff have just the right amount of musical arrogance ~ OMG the cool things they've found for me. (all Michigan) although I don't get to any of them nearly enough. Those are all good ones. I like Encore quite a bit too. RIP Hot Hits. And good riddance to Music Station. Encore is my favorite in Ann Arbor and probably overall. Great selection and often great prices on the vinyl! What is Hot Hits? It sounds familar and I've probably been there...by any chance is it that one that sells a little bit of everything and is on Gratiot. All those mentioned are really good but have you ever been to Memories and Melodies? It's a gem! It's pretty amazing with a huge selection of new CDs and used vinyls. There is a whole room of $1 records and about two rooms called "The Dance Room" or something with 12" records. When I go back home, I gotta go back there. I like Recordtime (in Roseville....not sure if I've been to the other) but often get sort of bored there. I just got a digital camera and I'll bring it with me next time I go to any of these places. Gratiot actually has Recordtime and M&M within a few miles and I tend to go there. Also, when I was around there last time I looked for Car City (which is close, on Little Mack but I didn't find it). I remember going there like about ten years ago and I think it was Ok then. [Edited 12/13/07 6:29am]

[b]Cheapo is awesome. When I went to Minneapolis a few years ago, I stopped into both locations. I found some great stuff I hadnt been able to find anywhere else. They also sold me the Batman Can for .95cents!! A lil mistake on their part, but ehh what are you gonna do.
Electric Fetus was cool, but I didnt find a whole lot of Prince stuff there. Man how I miss Minneapolis. Such a great city.. good food.. mmmmm

I totally know Memories & Melodies. It probably has the best selection of new CD's of all the places mentioned here. And their vinyl and memorabilia is insane. I just don't have a very pleasant experience when I'm in there anymore cuz their staff is annoying and cold. I always forget about Car City. They're another one who have gone downhill. Haven't been there in a couple years. I know what you mean though. It can be tough to find. Not sure if they're still in business.

Right next door to Amoeba in Berkeley is:
RASPUTIN MUSIC! 4 floors on CDs, vinyls, cassettes, VHS, DVD, and every genre you can imagine!!!! Amoeba and Rasputin is the reason the Tower Records barely 45 minutes away had to close down! The Rasputin location near my school in Pleasant Hill also drove that Tower Records location out of town, then moved in Tower's old building! Now, the SF location.....that is an oasis: "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."
