I saw a great documentary of her a couple years ago that was full of vintage Amy moments like that. Fresh faced, rosy cheeked, vocally on point, and always laughing...some people are just not built to withstand the music industry machine, I guess

One of the things that has always irritated me is how the suits at her label always do the song and dance about how she's destined to be this and that...that THEY felt she was "limiting herself" by classifying herself as a jazz singer...needed to aim higher, blah, blah, blah. It's like they're reading from the music moneymaker playbook in every interview . Well... maybe pushing her out into mainstream was a nightmare of an idea. Not unlike many poetic, creative types, if the child is already hypersensitive and nuttier than a pack of Planters Peanuts to begin with, perhaps the metaphorical "mainstage at spring break" is just NOT where she needs to be. Put that girl back at jazz & soul festivals with her umpteen piece band, put her back in pretty concert halls and blues bars with her guitar where she belongs. The label should have long recouped their dough by now, now they need to unlatch their claws from her and leave her be for a minute

her second album makes her first record sound terrible. i actually dug it when it came out but listening to it now in light of her second album she basically sounds like a really annoying version of erykah badu. fuck me pumps i find to be incredibly cloying, and lots of the jazzy phrasings throughout the record sound very affected and forced. the second album however just has everything on the right place and vocally she's perfectly natural.

I love her.
