2008 Grammy Nominations Unveiled

CNN.com

Kanye West, Amy Winehouse and the Foo Fighters were among the leading Grammy contenders.

West received a leading eight nominations. Winehouse received six, including for best new artist, record and song of the year for her hit "Rehab," and album of the year for "Back to Black."

Other best new artist nominees were Feist, Paramour, Taylor Swift and Ledesi.

Winehouse’s Back to Black will compete with the Foo Fighters Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, Vince Gills’ These Days, Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters, and West’s Graduation for album of the year.

The nominees for album of the year are "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace" by the Foo Fighters, "These Days" by Vince Gill, "River: The Joni Letters" by Herbie Hancock, "Graduation" by Kanye West and "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse.

The nominees for song of the year -- a songwriter's honor -- are "Before He Cheats" (performed by Carrie Underwood), "Hey There Delilah" (Plain White Ts), "Like a Star" (Corinne Bailey Rae), "Rehab" (Amy Winehouse) and "Umbrella" (Rihanna).

Record of the year nominations went to Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," the Foo Fighters' "The Pretender," Rihanna's "Umbrella," Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around Comes Around" and Winehouse's "Rehab."

The Grammy nominations were announced Thursday at the Music Box Theater in Hollywood. Awards will be handed out Feb. 10 in ceremonies at Staples Center.

Is it me or are the Grammy's getting more and more predictable? Who didn't think Amy Winehouse or Kanye West was going to get nominated? I'm not hating but there is just something kinda boring about what I've read in this list. But I will be watching in February.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Yep, I agree with you. I only hope Amy wins because the others don't do a thing for me really.

I dig Amy too and she definately deserves a Grammy. She's the only one who I've been remotely interested in musicwise all year.

I hear you. I love Amy's Back to Black cd. She's a trainwreck and needs rehab badly, but she has real talent and it definitely shows on her cd. Good luck to her.

Can't stand Corinne Bailey Rae...wtf is the big deal with that broad? Singing like a mush-mouthed 2-year-old wins you praise these days, I guess.

You are on point Empress. I wish her the best on her journey and I hope she gets over her addictions so she can continue to develop her talent.

In case everyone was wondering where the "favorite" Bruce Springsteen is, he was not eligible since he was released on October 2nd the Grammys new deadline is September 30th, so next grammys be ready for the Springsteen/Eagles Grammy Show. My guess is also that Amy Whinehouse is gonna be this years "india Arie" and "Billy Joel" basically up for alot possibly winning nothing, the grammys tends to do that, though i think she will probably get Best New Artist you really never know with the voting.

Feist for best new artist? What are the new qualifications for this category?

They changed those rules years ago (Shelby Lynn won for her fifth studio album) to say something along the lines of first release that gets the artist wide public notice.

I remember that now, yes. That new rule is totally unnecessary. She took a possible nomination away from Hurricane Chris or Soulja Boy. confused

OK just a few MAJOR issues with the Grammy's once again. First of all why have rules when they arent followed, Bruce Springsteens "Magic" missed the deadline of September 30th with his release of October 2nd, so he was counted out of the "album of the Year" category, and yet was nominated for ROCK ALBUM?? Also, I love Herbie Hancock and hes great BUT an Album of the Year nomination for a COVERS record, havent the grammys learned from the past episodes of "Clapton Unplugged" and Tony Bennet Covers. The same goes for U2 being nominated for "Instant Karma", now i love U2 but come on now, its not their song. Next Complaint is still the lack of the Rock Female Category, stop combining it and putting Lucinda Williams up against Bruce Springsteen, shit, just look around their were at least 5 great Rock oriented females out there this year, Ann Wilson, Melissa Ehteridge just to name 2. Next complaint is a BIG one and its how they put together the ALBUM OF THE YEAR nominees, basically they take something from every genre, i think that SUCKS, mainly because what if the "best" rock album wasnt that great you would just put it in to be all-inclusive, stupid rule to go by. And next thing would be NOMINATE some un-commercial Rap Music, please, Rap has been around long enough to look around for others besides Jay Z and TI, how about Mos Def for one.

As far as predictions, i dont really care, since this is the second straight year where i really could care less who wins. But 3 people i would like to see win their nominations are awards given out before the show, one would be John Mellencamp for "Our Country" in Rock Male its about time to give this guy something, next would be Paul McCartney for "memory almost full" as POP ALBUM though not a POP record and should have been in Best Album, its time for him too, and last but not least Bon Jovi "You want to make a Memory" as Pop Group Performance, mainly because last year they won their first grammy ever but in the country category? Plus in that field they are the best in the category. Last but not least i do think that this will be Kanye's year to get his awards,BUT after what he went through this year i think a lesson he will learn is that an "award" as not as important as he always made it every year he lost. A very tough lesson to learn but life is a tough lesson.

As for misses in my opinion outside of the Springsteen mistake and McCartney in the wrong category, i would say Norah Jones was a miss, mainly because it was her best record yet, and also Katharine Mcphee would have been my choice to nominate in Best New Artist, though she was a long shot.

They always are. Someone with "edge" but is still easy to piegonhole like Amy is alway a shoein and so is Kanye. I like Amy's album but spare us treating her like the second coming.

Is this the first time Foo Fighters ever got this much Grammy love? It's so stupid that they invite people that are getting lots of nods like that.

I agree, the Grammys always overdo it with the "Hype" on an artist, but really the Grammys arent a committee they are nothing but recording artists and Labels themselves nominating what they feel are their big records, which is why you will almost NEVER see an Indie Album nominated, unless its by a well known artist that others in the industry have heard of.

Yeah the grammys very rarely will go that BAD of a route, thats more of a American Music Awards type of nominee, it doesnt get worse than the AMA categories "Best Ringtone" ??
