gene cares more about the business aspect of making music than the expression aspect, which is fine and completely valid, but it's not the only valid approach out there.

if an artist has the money to offer initiatives to fans such as what radiohead and NIN have done, why not take a calculated risk and offer an album online at a "name your own price" charge? radiohead beat the unauthorized leaks in a way that makes the band and the fans happy...that in itself is a victory, i'd say.

i think what NIN and radiohead are doing are exciting, and i hope it's a hint of what's to come with other artists, where it's more about developing a strong bond between artist and listener and creating more direct ways of getting music. gene needs to stick to licensing KISS's image to pinball machines and coffins.

Every artist needs to ask them:

Are you into music as a art form?

OR

Are you into music as a business?

I think its both regardless of the person, no performer/artist/musician wants to not make money and have to get a 9-5 job, so in reality they all want to make money so they can at least exist without doing that, and be able to maintain it through their life.

Yes...waiting in line for "overpriced CDs"...Because Kiss hit their peak in the CD age! I'm not laughing at Gene so much as this writer. Both living too much in their own idealogies, only Simmons is correct. Radiohead did well with "In Rainbows"? Really?

The second question is the real question most artists have to answer and it is not that far removed from the first question.

Fair enough if you're a musical genius.

But if you're a rap artist that plays in a genre (hip-hip) where the average time limit of mainstream success is within 3 career albums tops?!? Even an piss-poor run with underground success is a lot longer if using MySpace & YouTube.

Since we need to get technical on purpose:

1. Rakim, KRS-ONE, & Kool Keith

OR

2. 50 Cent, Kanye West, & Jay-Z

By selecting #2, you'll also admitting that your stockbrokers have more value than your fans or your craft.
