What the heck is so special about.........

HEY JUDE

by the Beatles???

Dont get me wrong

I have Revolver, White Album, Beatles Anthology 2 & 3, Magical Mystery Tour and Sargent Pepper. But I just dont get what is so good about that song? I listen 2 it and it just doesnt do anything for me. Its sappy dry and :boring: (kinda like the Let It Be album which is part of the reason I never bothered 2 buy it).

Album plays and love for vinyl records.

It's long, no seriously it was the longest No 1 song ever, maybe still is at 7.05. It was No 1 for 9 weeks. Paul wrote it for Julian Lennon. It's all about the 'na-na-na's' but I think Pauls vocals great.

For me, it's what may currently be referred to as a foreign substance called a memorable melody.

A challenge:
Feel free to come up with a comparably interesting and memorable melody from anything in today's Top 10...

...And make sure your peoples is there...cause you might get embarrassed. biggrin

It's one of those rare songs when McCartney started mimicking Lennons writing style...
Other than that... it's the melody and its catchyness
plus it's fucking amazing when they all go off at the end...

It is what it is. Sometimes greatness is indefinable. Although the catchiness and the tour-de-force sing-along at the end go some way in explaining it. This song chokes me up, actually. I love it.

I feel you, but something about the LOVE cd version makes it ALOT better.

I don't know what it was, but I like the LOVE version better, a whole lot better. it seems more grittier and soulful, i don't know what homedude did to it.
The regular version is just ok.

I find I like alot of LOVE versions of the songs than the original one.

Anybody got a full list of the differences that were made?

I don't like it as much as I used to, but the ending is really great, despite all the repetition. Amazing vocal from Paul.

And as mentioned, the great melody, decent lyrics, great performance.

Not an exotic beauty, but a near flawless one.

It's well performed. The lyrics are decent if you know what they're about, the melody is pretty good though it's kinda remeniscient of some of their other stuff. But Paul sings the FUCK outta that tune! It's nowhere near my favorite Beatles tune, but the fact that he plays it so well really takes is over the threshold.

Personally i think "Hey Jude" is one of their weaker singles (from one of their weaker albums)

But, as other people said, its probably because of the anthemic and sing-along aspects it became such a popular song.

Personally i think more ambivalent, psychedelic efforts like Strawberry Fields Forever and I am the wallruss are far superior.

It's not on any proper album, only compilations.

I agree with this, though, and it says something about the public that Hey Jude was their biggest single, and Strawberry Fields was the first (in like 4 or 5 years) to not go #1

I'm more of an ice water and soda water kind of guy, but "Hey Jude" always struck me as being the prototypical drinking-in-the-bar-with-your-friends kind of song.

Especially if one of those friends is having lady problems. comfort

there it is.

like it or hate it, the melody gets in your head and it's simple to hum or whistle or whatever ya do when there's no stereo around.

"melody" is a naughty word in today's pop music scene, but i think no matter what generation you're from, the songs with the catchy, memorable melodies are the ones that people remember once the fads die off.

that's what's so great about "hey jude". you don't have to like it, but you'll remember it.

It's a very long melody, too.

Some musicians make melodies that just repeat the same line over & over, but Hey Jude (the first half at least) covers a lot of territory.

And the second half, while it repeats, builds tension through the repetition and the building intensity of the performance.
