1999 or 2000: Which year of music was better?

I don't know. You tell me. I don't feel like writing a large post. So, I need some inspiration. Why don't you guys kick it off for me?

Both were pretty tepid years. 2001 was better than both combined, if you ask me.

I don't know. It must have been what "YOU" were listening to. I guess it all depends. In a commercial aspect and from what was the biggest sparkplug (Back when music videos were getting actual "NOTICEABLE" quota of airplay, I think that 2000 was the best out of "THE THREE", quite frankly. Eminem was in his prime. Britney Spears (Not crazy about the girl, but she was in the limelight and in the highlight of her career with still, enough of her hidden agenda to surprise those who though of her as a mer ingenue.) was in her prime.

NSYNC (Not crazy about them, either. But, they were in their prime, as well.) were in their prime. Kid Rock was well past his prime, but, still was lucky enough to sit in his fame, just a little more (Plus, I digged American Bad Ass for more than one reason.).

The Last "GREAT" MTV Video Music Awards Show was aired in 2000 (In the mix of a year that the awakward 2000 Source Awards had occurred.). The Divas shows on VH1 looked pretty cool (I'm just saying. I guy can enjoy great singers on stage all in one night and nice performances.). I mean, it was a pretty good year for music. So, I understand Prince's last great effort (From the little I have heard.) was recorded in 2001. That's nice, but I don't remember much of any other ones. Perhaps you could refresh my memory.

except for the albums that came out by my absolute favorite artists of all time (say, Prince, Madonna, Bowie, U2, etc.) i don't think i could even name any music that came out in those years. that's sort of when i stopped paying attention to what was going in music. and started paying attention to a lot of other things in life, so even if i DID know music from that era, i probaby wouldn't be able to pin down the year it was made for you.

Difficult, 2 of my favorite albums ever were released in those years. Kid A in 2000, and The Soft Bulletin (The Flaming Lips) in 1999.

You're looking at it from an entirely different perspective. I HATE all of those artists you mention with a passion, which is why those years are quite musically bereft, if you ask me.

Tough call for me because everything about the music industry was going downhill beginning in 1994. 1999 & 2000 were hit and miss, IMO.

Radiohead - Kid A

ALLmusic.com review
-----
Instead of simply adding club beats or sonic collage techniques, Radiohead strive to incorporate the unsettling "intelligent techno" sound of Autechre and Aphex Twin, characterized by its skittering beats and stylishly dark sonic surfaces, for Kid A. To their immense credit, Radiohead don't sound like carpetbaggers, because they share the same post-postmodern vantage point as their inspirations. As a result, Kid A is easily the most successful electronica album from a rock band -- it doesn't even sound like a rock band, even if it does sound like Radiohead. So, Kid A is an unqualified success? Well, not quite. Despite its admirable ambition, Kid A is never as visionary or stunning as OK Computer, nor does it really repay the time it demands. OK Computer required many plays before revealing the intricacies of its densely layered mix; here, multiple plays are necessary to discern the music's form, to get a handle on quiet, drifting, minimally arranged songs with no hooks. Of course, the natural reaction of any serious record geek is that if the music demands so much work, it must be worth it -- and at times, that supposition is true. But Kid A's challenge doesn't always live up to its end of the bargain. It's self-consciously alienating and difficult, and while that can be intriguing, it seems deeper than it actually is. Repeated plays dissipate the mystique and reveal a number of rather drab songs (primarily during the second half), where there isn't enough under the surface to make Radiohead's relentless experimentation satisfying. But mixed results are still results, and about half of the songs positively shimmer with genius.

I think 2002 was really when it all hit low ("OR", began showing signs of hitting low.). Hell, at least there were videos on MTV, though. A little bit of Coldplay never hurt anybody. Incubus was cool fresh of air. Linkin Park was the shit (How could you hate these guys. At least give respect where respect is due. I think they are obviously passionate at what they do.). Sum 41 was cool. Overall, 2001 and 2000 were great years. I just think that 2000 was better. Plus, back when I was ten, eleven, and twelve; I kind of took what was handed to me in the mainstream. I wasn't as big of a rebel to my television screen as I am, now. Hell, it's the deterioration of the main outlets of music entertainment that had turned me off from the majority of the mainstream/commercial scene (Although, I still fancy fresh talent.). So, forgive me if my reminiscent taste is bland and depraving to your eyes, mouth, nose, and ears. It's all coincedence of youth.....

Both years are almost equally as horrible. Back in 1982, when Prince recorded "1999", I never in my wildest imagination would have imagined the actual year to be so dull. I envisioned hard fast funky jams like the ones that were out that year. Instead, the majority of the year was a bunch of dull slow to midtempo bullshit with a weak shit hop sound.

I pick 1999 as being a better year than 2000 only for Cher's "Believe". That was the only real jam I remember being out that year. Everything else was a snoozefest.

OUCH!!! That burns. 1999 and 2000 leave me so nostalgic. I for one liked Kid Rock. I think that the Rock genre of music, period, was more energetic and innovative. It was the last time I gave a fuck about what was being put out there with Rock, personally.
