Jay-Z debuts at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with "American Gangster," tying him with Elvis Presley for second place among artists with the most No. 1s. Only the Beatles, with 19 chart-toppers, have more ... Garth Brooks returns to the album charts after a nearly six-year absence ... Chris Brown isn't in a sophomore slump as his second album starts strong ... Cassidy claims his third top 10 set on The Billboard 200 while Angels & Airwaves climb into the top 10 as well with their latest effort ... In Progress Reports, we have updates on Dierks Bentley, Timbaland and the return of the Holiday Songs chart. FLASH POINTS • Jay-Z finds himself in rare company this week, as he becomes only the third artist to score a 10th album at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 as "American Gangster" debuts atop the chart with 425,000. The achievement ties him with Elvis Presley for second place among artists with the most No. 1s. Only the Beatles, with 19 chart-toppers, have more ... Jay-Z also maintains his lead as the artist with the most debuts at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, as all 10 of his chart-toppers started in the penthouse ... Since 1998, all eight of Jay-Z's solo studio albums hit No. 1 in addition to his "Collision Course" project with Linkin Park and his "Unfinished Business" collaborations set with R. Kelly. Upon closer inspection of his chart history, since 1998, all of Jay's albums have hit No. 1 except for an "MTV Unplugged" set (No. 31), his first R. Kelly matchup with "The Best of Both Worlds" (No. 2), a single-disc distillation of his two-CD "Blueprint 2" album titled "Blueprint 2.1" (No. 17) and the acappella version of "The Black Album" (No. 106) ... Why are we tying everything to 1998? Well, that year brought us his breakthrough set "Vol. 2 ... Hard Knock Life," which still is Jay's longest-running No. 1 album, with five weeks atop The Billboard 200. Previous to that album, he peaked at No. 23 with "Reasonable Doubt" in 1996 and No. 3 with "In My Lifetime, Vol. 1" in 1997. • Last week's No. 1, Eagles' "Long Road out of Eden," slips to No. 2 with 359,000 (down 49%). It holds at No. 1 on Top Country Albums, fending off a debut from Garth Brooks' "The Ultimate Hits." The latter set starts at No. 2 on Top Country Albums and at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 with 352,000. Brooks last visited the two charts back in 2001, when "The Magic of Christmas -- Songs From 'Call Me Claus' " reached the lists. Brooks' last studio set, 2001's "Scarecrow," debuted at No. 1 on the big chart and the country tally with 466,000. The new "Ultimate Hits" boasts 30 hits and four new songs, including the album's first single, "More Than a Memory." The latter made chart history when it became the first single to ever debut at No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart in September. This week the song bullets at No. 4. • Chris Brown's sophomore set "Exclusive" makes a splashy bow at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 with 294,000. His self-titled debut started at No. 2 with 154,000 in December 2005. His new album's second single, "Kiss Kiss," has been parked at No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100 for the past two weeks and may likely hold there once the new chart is released later today (Nov. 14) ... Angels & Airwaves' second album, "I-Empire," begins at No. 9 on The Billboard 200 with 66,000. The band's first set, "We Don't Need to Whisper," bowed higher, at No. 4, with 127,000 in May 2006 ... Cassidy returns to The Billboard 200 with "B.A.R.S.: The Barry Adrian Reese Story" at No. 10 shifting 63,000. It's the rapper's first album since he did eight months in a correctional facility for involuntary manslaughter and then later got into a near-fatal car accident in 2006. His last release, 2005's "I'm a Hustla," started at No. 5 on The Billboard 200 with 93,000. • Other debuts on The Billboard 200 include Wisin y Yandel's "Los Extraterrestres" (No. 14, with 53,000), Little Big Town's "A Place to Land" (No. 24, with 35,000), the soundtrack to "American Gangster" (No. 36, with 21,000), the Starbucks-exclusive Christmas album "Stockings by the Fire" (No. 43, with 18,000), Van Morrison's latest hits set "Still on Top" (No. 48, with 18,000), Jimmy Buffett's "Live in Anguilla" (No. 54, with 15,000), Sigur Ros' "Hvarf/Heim" (No. 58, with 15,000) and Demon Hunter's "Storm the Gates of Hell" (No. 85, with 10,000). PROGRESS REPORTS • Dierks Bentley claims his fifth No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart as "Free and Easy (Down the Road I Go)" jumps from No. 2 to No. 1. In its 25th week on the chart, the third single from his album "Long Trip Alone" marks Bentley's longest trek to the top. His debut single, "What Was I Thinkin'," needed 24 weeks to hit the summit in September 2003. His quickest ascent came with his last No. 1, "Every Mile a Memory" (17 weeks) in the Oct. 27, 2006, issue. Except for his last single, the album's title cut, Bentley has now reached No. 1 with four of his last five entries. • On the CHR/Top 40 radio airplay chart, Timbaland's "Apologize" registered 10,051 plays, holding at No. 1 on the tally for a second week. It becomes the second song in the history of the chart to top 10,000 plays in a week. Earlier this year, Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" exceeded that threshold for three weeks, hitting a high of 10,092 spins on the chart dated Aug. 3. "Apologize" looks poised to break the format record next week, as it gains 526 plays, the chart's fifth-best increase. • As several Adult Contemporary radio stations have already switched to all-holiday programming, we have welcomed back the Holiday Songs chart to billboard.com and billboard.biz. The Holiday Songs chart ranks all seasonal titles, regardless of year of release. Only holiday songs released for the first time in 2007 will be eligible to appear on the current Adult Contemporary tally and any of our other current charts ... The top 10 starts with Burl Ives' "A Holly Jolly Christmas" at No. 1 followed by Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," Nat "King" Cole's "The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)," Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock," Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," Andy Williams' "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You," John Lennon & Yoko Ono's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," Johnny Mathis' "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" and Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad." A LOOK AHEAD • Among the titles released this week, due on next week's charts: Alicia Keys' "As I Am," Celine Dion's "Taking Chances," Led Zeppelin's "Mothership," the compilations "Now 26" and "Now Party Hits," and Seal's "System." • Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2006 when: the Game's "Doctor's Advocate" bowed at No. 1 with 358,000 while Akon's "Konvicted" arrived at No. 2 with 284,000. The top six albums each sold more than 100,000. | |

WOW down almost 17%, its getting worse than they even thought, the prediction is that by the end of the Fiscal year (feb 08) the industry will be down 22% to last years total, i think it will be even worse than that, with the exception of the Eagles and Celind and Alicia and Bruce somewhat, there isnt a strong XMAS seller this year. I have a feeling that by the end of the holiday season that the Eagles might have the best selling album this year, a further kick in the groin to the industry who targets only the young.
