I was trying not to bring the negativity, but I never cared for her version of this song.

I feel ya, it's an acquired taste for some. I adore both versions actually. Marvin and Tammi's more so but Diana's has its place.

I am not allowed here to say that I prefer this to the Marvin/Tammy version.

It's a beautiful song...I love both versions but this one has a gorgeous arrangement. It was my parents' "song" when they were married...
They're divorced now. | |

Ain't it? But the music is stunning... them strings at the beginning... WHOO! Which is why I prefer it. The music in the other version is kinda by-the-numbers Motown production. Not bad, but it doesn't stand out to me. Now, the drama and arrangement of the Diana Ross version can't be beat. Love it. We're not talking vocals, cuz Tammy and Marvin got Miss Ross beat easily. But hells bells, Mary, she sure whispers the shit outta this song and I eat it up with a fucking sugar-coated spoon!

damn i can't choose on this!!! Nobody beats Marvin & Tammy's version, but I love Diana's version as well.....hmmm, gotta go with Marvin & Tammi's as my favorite. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Anyone got any trouble with YouTube pages? LOL Some images won't load up from where I'm at. Could it be too much bandwidth?

And this is why I secretly adore Diana. She brought the drama in her songs! But nothing beats the original by Marvin & Tammi.

My favourite version is by the Temptations (with Diana Ross and the Supremes).
http://www.amazon.co.uk/D...734&sr=8-1 but I like the Diana Ross version too, because it is so over the top. I'm going to see the Temptations in concert next week. YES! [Edited 11/16/07 9:59am]

Bump for people who wanna hear both versions and compare. Either way, the song is a soul classic!

I don't care what anyone says -- the Diana Ross rendition is absolutely stellar.
I find both the original and the Ross cover equally classic. Between the simple, sweet charm of the former and the epic, goosebumps-producing sweep of the latter, there's too much of a contrast between the two for me to pick one over the other.

It sounds like different songs when you hear the two of them back and back so in essence Diana's wasn't really as much a cover as it was a brand new song with old lyrics brought back to life.

I prefer the Marvin and Tammy version most definitely. One slightly off-topic question though: Is this "new" song featuring a sample from their version or it just a ripoff from the song? http://youtube.com/watch?v=I6LVGcIC1Tc

It's a credited sample. I love Diana's version, but I definitely love the original more. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis
