Damn!!! That Brutha epitomized cool during that era.
My Dad was a huge fan of The Family Stone. Sly's image appeal helped to bring black youth over to rock, and encouraged black militants to try and make him an agent of their cause. I remember my Dad always talking about the comparisons of Sly and Jimi Hendrix. My Dad would tell me that Sly was "mainstream and underground...but unlike Jimi Sly was able to "crossover" without losing the Black audience. My mom took me to see Sly twice when I was 12. I was mesmerized by Sly and The Family Stone. They blew me away! Genius icon to the max! Yes, he did influence mostly everyone in the music industry to me. That strong Church influence mixed in with funk and pop was unique to say the least! Very underrated. Bought every freakin' album! I love and miss him. Lennytunia

Even Madonna was influenced by Sly & The Family Stone. She wrote her 1989 hit "Express Yourself" as a "musical tribute" to Sly.In 1990,she incorporated a little bit of "It's A Family Affair" into her concerts (just right before "Keep It Together").In 1993,she even sang a little bit of "Everybody Is A Star" during her 'Girlie Show' concerts.

One of my top 10 songs of ALL TIME is "Underdog" by Sly.
The lyrics to one of his old doo-wop tunes were something like..."Tonight is the night...to squeeze it in...tonight is the night...to love it in...etc" everytime -------------------------------------------------
Something new for your ears and soul. http://artists.mp3s.com/a...dadli.html

I love and his music.
Unfortunatley, Sly Stone has marred his legacy with a pathological failure to appear at gigs ontime and the perform in his assigned spot and for the contracted time period. He's also hit record companies back with tremendous cost overruns that resulted in inferior product. His greatness is undeniable, but he has the mark of a total burnout; unable to get anywhere near his past achievements. test

Yeah...I just hope Sly stays healthy the rest of his life, with regard to his past indulgences. Last time he was seen publicly by a lot of people, I think, was the Rock and Roll HOF inductions when he and The Family Stone were inducted. Just going by a couple of reports by people who have been around him personally since then, he's doing fine and records all the time at his house. Just doesn't release anything. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

As long as someone is going to post a thread I'm going to keep saying it.
Sly and the Family Stone is one of the best in music. How many artists will be and have been influenced? Too many to count. Are people still trying to reach the level that Sly did in 1966? Obviously, have you heard anything even remotely close? Nobody here knows anything about the man, so speculation on what was going on in his life (showing up, over budget, etc.) is pointless. None of which detracts from his musical legacy, by the way. test
