WHere's Mistermaxx when you need him?

I don't know if you all drummed him out of this forum or what, but he was a knowledgeable, level-headed dude (as long as you didn't mention he who's name begins with R.) Anyway, he hated on Prince on the regular, to the point of absurdity, I thought. But I would LOVE to hear his thoughts on P's current actions. You know he's somewhere calling him all kinds of "tired, corny, jive turkey"s. falloff

He was banned from this board. He only thinks P is corny because his mind is stuck in a RnB ghetto.

Hey missy, R&B started in the ghetto. I don't know what you're talkin' bout. Mind your tongue when speaking of R&B, lest you long for a lashing. whip lol

I used to like him be he talks fucking shit half the time. Apparently James Brown (pre-death obviously) going on TV shows to promote himself and perform constituted as the programme makers exploiting him and black people in return dead

First of all I love RnB music but, I don't think black artist should limit themselves. I was around back in the 80's when black artist were accused of selling out when the crossed over.

We as black people can act like crabs in a barrel sometimes with this need to hold each other down.

We invented rock and roll and we certainly should be playing it and listening to it. People like Mister Maxx are narrow minded.

You should also have respect for those that choose to do what they love the most. People like Stevie Wonder and dare I say it - D'Angelo explore R&B to its fullest regions without diluting what they do. Funkadelic said 'Who says a funk band can't play rock". They referred to themselves as a FUNK band, not a funk/rock band. If you ask them what they do, they will say FUNK not rock even though there are many elements of rock in some of their songs. Stevie took R&B to another level and touched on regions of depth that Prince never did within the R&B genre because he makes hybrid music, which works for Prince but its not because he's "got the R&B thing mastered" - he doesn't. He's not one of the greatest R&B/soul artists; he's great because he blends genres well. At the same time, you take a Stevie Wonder and look where R&B can go? R&B doesn't need to be diluted and those who choose to stay in the "ghetto" and make music should not be trashed. Rock is not some divine elevation of music, its just another branch. If there's any form of music that hasn't grown in great steps, its rock. Every 12 years or so, rock changes. R&B changes about every 2-3 years.
While I don't disagree with you on the crabs in a barrel comment, I have to show respect for my R&B brothas and sistas because they embrace and love the genre like I do. We invented jazz, house and what became techno and electro, too. As a matter of fact, you'll be hard pressed to find a genre of music we didn't help invent or innovate in some way. Its no disrespect to other forms of music to delve deeply into R&B if that's what you love.

Well we will have to agree to disagree on this one. I put P up with the other great ones. He came up with the concept and music for the Time after all and you are still hearing his influence today but, I think he knew from a business point of view he was only going to go so far doing RnB. He accepted reality and branched out. I respect those that just play RnB because that is what they want to do. However, have you ever noticed it is those artist that are always trashing black artist who step outside of the box. I never hear of alternative black artist trashing strictly RnB artist or the genre.

We are not one monolithic group that must think the same. I read a lot of that in Mister Maxx’s post. It is tired and I am glad he stays over on Okayplayer.com.
