I've loved this song for years, mainly because of the lyrics. . . . at first I couldn't figure out what the heck he was trying to say, but his lyrics were not meant to be taken as a literal translation

Beautiful. Jimi said he wrote this after he had an arguement with his then girlfriend Kathy Etchingham.

nod Nice. But the thing looks like it was shot by Noel Redding's girlfriend, though...

Closeups of his hands as he plays, little attention paid to Hendrix's. Especially during the guitar solo...

disbelief

Noel was way out of his league in that trio.

Jimi is one of those artists who's been so highly worshipped for so long that he's now actually quite underrated, and this song is one of the main reasons why. And unlike other similar, great yet highly overexposed/overworshipped artists, there's so much of his material that still hardly gets any exposure, unlike say the Beatles Or led Zeppelin whose entire catalogue is rotated through at least twice daily on every single classic rock radio station rolleyes (and I love the Beatles, and....well love/hate led Zeppelin, but still).

Like it's already been stated in this thread, Jimi's ballads are beautiful. His ballad style of playing was definately in the school of Steve Cropper, Curtis and Womack. But of course, what set Jimi apart from those cats was that he had so much more going on. He would have that outer space element present at all times. Be it in his music or lyrics or, quite often, both. Simply put, Jimi wasn't from here and it shows.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. My dad used to play Jimi when I was younger. I remember trying to play this on acoustic guitar. I was terrible, but when you're little, you're just happy to be making noise. lol

He was always self-conscious about his voice. Hated it in reality.
But for vocalists like Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Donald Fagen and some others who wouldn't be considered "technical singers", their voices are the perfect vehicles for their own material.

Bootsy made a career (along with his bass playing of course) exaggerating elements of that Hendrix vocal personality. smile

I agree nod Jimi got alot of influence from Dylan. And I LOVE his version of All along the watchtower. IMO I think its better than dylans.

I know Boosty sounds JUST like Jimi. And always has me laughing "I commin baby..with both hands tied behind my back". I have mad love for both of them..but I never heard I jimi album I didnt fall in love with!

Hm.

I would say that, while I love some of Hendrix's songs, I came to love them via covers. I guess that's cuz, yeah, I don't care much for his singing voice.

Not that I require technical perfection in my singers, or even prefer it. But Hendrix really couldn't sing.

Speaks to his musical/songwriting ability that he was/is still so completely worth listening to. cool

Unfortunately, that's the case with many of his live recordings.
The Strats of the day couldn't handle the torture he put them through.wink

I think Hendrix WAS a great singer in terms of inflection, timing, phrasing, delivery etc. which are the same qualities that make Bob Dylan a great singer, and if you think about it, the same is true for Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday Louis Armstrong, Chuck Berry and a host of others.

None of the aforementioned people are the utmost exemplars in terms of vocal range or technical perfection, but few would argue with their expressiveness. You can certainly hear Dylan's influence in Hendrix's voice but Hendrix also was an influence in his own right. Just listen to Rasberry Beret again sometime, P's singing in that song owes a great deal to Jimi's style of phrasing.
