I would fuck the shit out of Dave Gahan. Even a band like Depeche Mode that already had a reputation for being depressing took it one step further:

The "Black Hole Sun" video is classic. Who remembers the girl with the ice cream spilling out of her mouth? I haven't seen that video since it aired back when it was popular. Still like Soundgarden though. Sublime. I used to like them more in the 90's than now, but they're still cool for a listen from time to time. I've always hated "What I Got" though. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

Well, he stayed to his own style:
and George Michael went from this in the 80s: to this in the 90s: "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Whats depressing about that ....Okay, upon reading this thread I can see that the 90's were pretty morbid theme-wise But man, I love most of the music mentioned thus far! Depression Rocks! Did anyone mention how Marilyn Manson was at the peak of his career in the 90's also Garbage (i.e. I'm Only Happy When it Rains) If you will, so will I

Boy George Madonna Michael Jackson Prince Rick James Cyndi Lauper Annie Lennox Grace Jones Tina Turner, etc With these artists, you could take their 80s look and create a Halloween costume based on it.Everyone would know who you're trying to be.In the 90s,nobody looked unique anymore. All the rappers looked the same, and all the grunge rock stars dressed alike too. I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in, And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand. I would understand, The angry boy, a bit too insane, Icing over a secret pain, You know you don't belong, You're the first to fight, You're way too loud, You're The flash of light, On a burial shroud, I know something's wrong, Well everyone I know has got a reason, To say, put the past away, I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend, You could cut ties with all the lies, That you've been living in, And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand, I would understand. Well he's on the table, And he's gone to code, And I do not think anyone knows, What they are doing here, And your friends have left, You've been dismissed, I never thought it would come to this, And I, I want you to know, Everyone's got to face down the demons, Maybe today, We can put the past away, I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend, You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in, And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand, I would understand, I would understand... Can you put the past away, I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend, I would understand... Jumper - Third Eye Blind 1991 was the year that Nirvana blew up into the mainstream. Just prior to that, we had the leftover crap from the 80's hair metal and teeny bop bands. Obviously, "Teen Spirit" was the big depressing grunge anthem, and while there was very angry dark gansgta rap around prior to 1991, it was balanced out by the likes of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Heavy D, Digital Underground, and Will Smith (a.k.a. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince). But I think the moment that hip-hop took a huge turn for the darkness came when Dr. Dre introduced Snoop Dogg with "Deep Cover", which was actually the first big rap single which advocated killing police officers. ("Fuck Tha Police" was very incendiary in its attitude towards cops, but it didn't actually protray killing them, and while Ice-T's "Cop Killer" drew the most attention from angry politicians and social activists, it was really a metal song and not hip-hop.) Tonight's the night I get in some shit, (Yeah) Deep cover on the incognito tip. Killin' motherfuckers if I have to, Peelin' caps too, cause you niggas know I'm comin' at you. I guess thats part of the game, But I feel for the nigger who thinks he just gonna come and chance things With the swiftness, so get it right, with the quickness, And let me handle my business, yo. I'm on a mission and my mission won't stop Until I get the nigger maxin at the top. I hope you get his ass before he drops. Kingpin kickin back while his workers sling his rocks. Coming up like a fat rat. Big money, big cars, big body guards on his back. So it's difficult to get him. But I got the hook up with somebody who knows how to get in contact with him. Hit him like this and like that, Let 'em know that I'll make it for a big fat dope sack What is this pen? so let's rush it. If you want to handle it tonight we'll discuss it On the nigga's time, in the nigga's place, Take a strap just in case one of his boys recognise my face. Cause he's a sheisty motherfucker, But I gives a fuck, cause I'm going deep cover. Yeah, and you don't stop (cause it's 1-8-7 on an undercover cop) Yeah, and you don't stop (cause it's 1-8-7 on an undercover cop) Creep with me as I crawl through the hood, Maniac, lunatic, call 'em Snoop Eastwood Kickin dust as I bust fuck peace And, the mothafuckin drug police You already know I gives a fuck about a cop So why in the fuck would you think that it would stop Plot, yeah, that's what we's about to do Take your ass on a mission with the boys in blue Dre, (whatup, Snoop) yo I got the feelin Tonight's the night like Betty Wright, and I'm chillin Killin, feelin, no remorse, yeah So lets go straight to the motherfuckin' source And see what we can find Crooked ass cops that be gettin niggaz a gang of times And now they wanna make a deal with me Scoop me up and put me on they team and chill with me And make my pockets bigger They want to meet with me tonight at 7:00, so whassup nigger? What you wanna do? (What you wanna do?) I got the gauge, a uzi and the mothafuckin 22 so if you wanna blast, nigga we can buck 'em If we stick 'em then we stuck 'em so fuck 'em!" Yeah, and you don't stop (cause it's 1-8-7 on an undercover cop) Yeah, and you don't stop (cause it's 1-8-7 on an undercover cop) Six fo' five was the time on the clock, When me and my homey bailed in the parking lot. The scene looked strange and it felt like a set up Better not be, cause if it is, they're getting lit up. Oh here they come from the back and they laxed. I'm checkin for the gats they strap, so whats up black? Chill, lets hit a deal, if it aint up to what you feel then grab your steel. Right, so, what you motherfuckers gonna come at me with? Hope you ain't wantin' none of my grip. Cause you can save that shit. Guess what they told me? 'We give you 20 G's if you snitch on your homey, We'll put you in a home, and make your life plush, Oh yeah, but you got to sell dope for us." Hmmm, let me think about it Turned my back and grabbed my gat and guess what I told him before I shot it: 'If you don't quit, yeah, if you don't stop, yeah, I'm lettin' my gat pop' Cause it's 1-8-7 on an undercover cop Yeah, and you don't stop (cause it's 1-8-7 on an undercover cop) Yeah, and you don't stop (cause it's 1-8-7 on an undercover cop) Actually, the whole decade of the 1990's wasn't depressing; it was just 1991 through the end of 1996. Then there was this incredibly dramatic change that happened. Part of it was because the biggest musical heroes of the decade were dead or murdered (Kurt Cobain, 2Pac, Biggie Smalls), got too hammered by their drug addictions (Layne Staley of Alice In Chains, Courtney Love, Jimmy Chamberlain and D'arcy Wretzky of Smashing Pumpkins, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots) or just disintegrated (Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, The Breeders); and the other part was a generational shift in music that occurred almost exactly at the same time that the grunge and gangsta rap movements burned out (Spice Girls, Hanson, Backstreet Boys, 'Nsync, Britney Spears).

Cool thread - I guess you have a point, but maybe I'm still too stuck in the 90s to recognize it!
PPL like me who grew up in the 80s were sick of that over-packaged commercial fluff that overtook everything (S.A.W. - Kylie, Rick Astley - Bros!!!, NKOTB etc etc) and the early nineties felt like quality music was finally getting some exposure. The late 90s backlash tho was worse than the 80s and made me switch off altogether. And I guess I never really re-connected... Why has noone mentioned The Breeders? and Sonic Youth (altho they wer 80s alternative remnants)? Stone Roses were upbeat depressing - as was all of Britpop really...
