In the 80s,artists had their own unique style and look...

Boy George
Madonna
Michael Jackson
Prince
Rick James
Cyndi Lauper
Annie Lennox
Grace Jones
Tina Turner,etc

With these artists,you could take their 80s look and create a Halloween costume based on it.Everyone would know who you're trying to be.In the 90s,nobody looked unique anymore.All the rappers looked the same,and all the grunge rock stars dressed alike too.

That point is echoing a conversation I was having.

IMO, some of the most creative "Rock-Star" fashions were unleashed during the 60s...

...when it seemed folks made a concerted effort to look interesting & unique.

Whilst I agree with what y'all are saying I have to say I don't like the other extreme either. Take a look at Whitney videos like "How Will I Know" or "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and you'll see a good example of the other extreme. The 80s was filled with that kind of vacuous fluff. Hell, I still haven't gotten over Stock Aitken and Waterman. And don't even get me started on buffoons like Motley Crue.

No one is trying to big up Rick Astley here!

But all the joy and love was sucked out of music and replaced with depression and fuckin'.

So.

Björk;
Debut, Post, Homogenic.
Massive Attack;
Blue Lines, Protection, Mezzanine.
Annie Lennox;
Diva.
Prince;
The Gold Experience.
Nine Inch Nails;
The Downward Spiral, The Fragile.
Beck;
Odelay, Mutations, Midnite Vultures.

Okay, some are what more positive than others, but hey, what is so hip about positive. Prince was pretty negative when he made his best work, so fuck all that.

You know what's even more revealing is how ALL of them undid their images in the 90s to look just as boring as everyone else.

We are still reeling from these effects today.

OK maybe not Prince lol razz

However he did release his darkest albums in 1994:

Prince recorded The Black Album in the 80s. Maybe Warner was part of the conspiracy and that's why the record was released in the dark 90s.

Oh and you are RIGHT! Hiphop became commercial in the 90's. I blame hiphop. It's depressing, all the blingbling and ho-calling.

One of the most beautiful dancefloor moments I EVER had was in the 90's. I was HAPPY, if only for a blissful 8 minutes. An underground club blasting Teardrop by Massive Attack and Underwater Love by Smoke City. The music cleared the dancefloor, so I had it to myself with a few others that know good music when they hear it.

I have to admit there were some good dance songs by Dee Lite, Ce Ce Peniston, Crystal Waters to offset the darkness but by the mid nineties. It was just dark especially in 94 that was a dark year yall.

Also, people were dropping like flies too.

Stop insinuating things about my taste! It doesn't change the fact that the 90s was almost completely dark in mood!

I have to say that I really love the 1990s and the darkness of that era, but you do bring up a valid point.

Even a band like Depeche Mode that already had a reputation for being depressing took it one step further:

exactly... even the dark 80s stuff got a bit darker in the 90s. At least other decades had more of a balance.

Hey, I agree with you. But at the same time Nirvana, Snoop and the rest were a useful antidote to the cheesiness of the likes of Hammer and Motley Crue. That doesn't mean I don't think it went too far though. I totally feel what you're saying. That shit was unhealthy, but then I think The Pussycat Dolls are unhealthy too.

Of course, there were bands like Weezer, Cake, and the Flaming Lips that weren't "depressing", but rather made waves by being "different". I don't know anybody that was sad while dancing around to "Buddy Holly".

That's why I was mentioning some of the stomach-turning lurid sex makeovers of the 90s, especially in R&B, but now it's pop.

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain

I like watchin' the puddles gather rain

And all I can do is just pour some tea for two

and speak my point of view

But it's not sane, It's not sane

I just want some one to say to me

I'll always be there when you wake

Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today

So stay with me and I'll have it made

And I don't understand why I sleep all day

And I start to complain that there's no rain

And all I can do is read a book to stay awake

And it rips my life away, but it's a great escape

escape.....escape.....escape.....

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain

ya don't like my point of view

ya think I'm insane

Its not sane.....it's not sane
