Mooney sings a couple of songs on Soundtracks, as well, though I don't think either of the songs are that memorable. She Brings the Rain is a nice song, I guess, but it feels a bit lightweight. Even if you prefer Monster Movie to Tago Mago, I'd still recommend Future Days and Ege Bamyasi over anything else they recorded.

And please, please, please don't try to talk me into thinking that Mooney > Suzuki. Can with Mooney are pretty great. Can without either of them are still pretty good. But Can with Suzuki are a band possessed by god-like genius!

I picked up Ege Bamyasi today. The first half is all very good! It seems more subtle so far, but still ear-bending.

Review of Monster Movie:

Can (or The Can in this case) has always been on my radar, but I hadn't taken the opportunity to explore their music until just recently. As much as I was prepared to expect the unexpected, Monster Movie proved to be a complete mind warp, and I feel that it has irrevocably changed my view of the limitless scope of music.

In the space of only four songs, Can finds plenty of room to explore wild swaths of uncharted territory. From the time that the opening rattle of "Father Cannot Yell" jolts with the kick of the bass, I knew I was in for something. Scorching guitars, sizzling percussion and lyrics that read like a classic myth swell in a sonic fury that is simply awesome. The more traditional "Mary, Mary So Contrary" finds comfort in a more conventional structure, but is no less powerful. In fact, this may be the best track on the first side. Malcolm Mooney's passionate and- yes- seductive vocals lilt with the sympathetic four-step descent pattern that gives the track an epic quality befitting a song built around a classic tale. Michael Karoli's guitar lavishly undresses the track in steamy licks and delicate caresses and really sends it into the stratosphere. The garage-rock rave up "Outside My Door" screeches along to a frantic rhythm, closing the first side admirably.

The closing track, however, contains the powerhouse. "Yoo Doo Right" is a monstrous opus so amazing that it precludes the possibility of excessive superlatives. From Mooney's primal rhythms and incandescent pleas to the deceptively catchy bass lines, the stage is set for a true classic. When Michael Karoli envelops the song in his disarmingly beautiful guitar embrace, the deal is sealed. The song evolves emotionally and structurally over the course of twenty minutes, just enough to keep my attention. Not all songs of such aspirations warrant their heady lengths, but "Yoo Doo Right" acquits itself on all counts, proving truly mesmerizing with each listen.

While I have only owned this album for a mere ten days, it is enough for me to anoint it a classic in my book. Ever since the first listen, its grooves and rhythms have haunted my subconscious. These songs have literally not left my head for days on end- it makes for embarrassing moments in class when I am mumbling "you made a believer out of meee" under my breath when students aren't looking. I'm not too proud to admit that I've become a bit obsessed with the image of Malcolm Mooney sauntering around the studio with four Germans creating this glorious display of sonic prowess. Suffice it to say that this album has changed the way I perceive music, which is quite the feat. Although Monster Movie seems to be viewed as a primitive precursor to the real goldmine of Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi, those albums haven't gripped me as much as this. A fan is born.
