I don't know if I have an essay in me, but my favourite album of the year is Robert Wyatt's Comicopera. It's an ambitious, sprawling mess of a record that falls apart in places, but possesses lots of great melodies and weird sounds.

What genre is it?

experimental singer-songwriter would be the most concise description, I guess. He started out playing prog-rock jazz fusion with Soft Machine in the '60s, but his music is a lot more accessible than you might assume with that pedigree. There's definitely still a strong jazz element to his sound, but most of his songs have strong pop melodies.

Interesting! Has 2007 gained any ground on 2006 for you?

Have you heard Sound of Silver?

Seriously, if you ever see Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt at anywhere close to a reasonable price, snap it up. It's a brilliant album, one of my favourites, and really one of a kind. It was recorded shortly after a drunken fall from a third story window at a party left him in a wheelchair permanently, and it's definitely a record made by someone who's suffered from a life-changing event. I won't guarantee that you'll love it or anything (opinions on it are pretty mixed, as you'll see if you look at the rateyourmusic page for it), but I think you'll find it interesting.

Edit - I should also mention that he makes an appearance on Bjork's Medulla - he sings on the song Submarine. I've never heard it myself, so I have no idea how prominent his vocal is on the track.

It has. My problem was that I just wasn't paying much attention to what was out there - too wrapped up in other things. I've really just started looking into new releases in the past month and a half or so, and I've found a lot of things I really liked or loved. I still don't think I've heard a record this year that I like as much as Modern Times or the Drift, but I have a lot of catching up to do. I haven't heard Sound of Silver yet, but it is definitely on my agenda.
