What else do you have and would you recommend?

Definitely either of these...

I'll second both of those, especially Future Days which is my favourite Can album. It's almost an ambient album, but don't let that put you off if you don't care for that type of music because it's also filled with great rhythms and melodies.

I have to say I'm pretty thrilled to see you checking them out. I know what you're saying about the second half of Tago Mago, but I've grown to really love that album - I have to admit I usually skip Peking O when I play it, however.

and Halleluwah is a hell of a song, isn't it?

"Peking O" had me cracking up in parts! The purchase was worth it alone for "Halleluwah".

What do you think of Monster Movie?

I've read about both of these and think those will be my next two. What do you think of Monster Movie and Tago Mago, if you've got 'em?

I have all the remasters, except for Monster Movie, Unlimited Edition and Soundtracks. I actually didn't have most of their albums on cd until the reissues came out. I just played my vinyl albums dubbed onto a cassette. I bought Monster Movie just before they announced the remasters, so I hate to buy it again.

Tago Mago is my 2nd favourite Can - Peking O isn't a something I go to much as I mentioned before, but otherwise I pretty much love every moment of that record. Aumgn is a bit of a mess, I realize, but it's also one of my favourite psychedelic freak-outs ever captured on tape.

I really like Monster Movie, though I kinda think of it as a 'template' album - one of those records where the band were still working out their style. There's no denying Father Cannot Yell and Yoo Doo Right, of course...

"Aumgn" is very effective. It would serve well as the soundtrack to a mini-horror movie. Those LOOOOOW strings are downright unnerving!

No love for "Mary, Quite Contrary"?

I like the song, but I've never thought of it as a highlight of the record. I'm going to give it another listen once my current album finishes - maybe I've been undervaluing it...

Maybe not- it does hit all the right buttons for me, as I have some natural love for 4-step chord descent. It's probably my favorite at this point, but the whole album is fantastic.

You too, Damo! I'ma investigate this shit!

I'd slot them like this:

Future Days
Tago Mago
Ege Bamyasi
Soon Over Babaluma (the first one I purchased - shelled out $25.00 for a used vinyl copy on a whim)
Monster Movie
Soundtracks

After this, things get pretty patchy, and unless you really get obsessed and feel like you HAVE TO HAVE EVERYTHING THEY EVER RECORDED, you can probably give the following a wide berth:

Landed
Flow Motion
Out of Reach
Saw Delight
Can

There was also a reunion album in '89 called Rite Time that I've never heard, but it's not meant to be any great shakes.

There's also a DVD that includes a concert from (i think) '71 that's mostly a free-form freakout. A fun listen and watching experience, but it's pricey - it comes packaged with a not-very-interesting documentary on the band and a CD of solo recordings that I haven't listened to yet for some unknown reason.

Edit - I managed to forget that there's a compilation of out-takes called Unlimited Edition that has some pretty cool grooves, but also has a lot of meandering aimless experimentation on it - you could give yourself quite a headache trying to find the quality stuff on this album. Based on this record, I would say they edited their records together very well.

Well, I think they kept it together for one fairly great album (soon over babaluma), but hey, my word is not gospel - some people like the post-damo albums. Mark Prindle (my favourite online reviewer) gives several of those records reasonably strong reviews. I really don't care for them myself, but they may well be your cuppa.

I just listened to Mary, and I think you're right. I've always kinda written it off as a buffer song, just something to track time between Father and Yoo Doo, but it's a good deal better than that.

I just found out that what I googled was actually a Jamie Foxx (yes, Jamie Foxx) song that borrows from "Mary, Quite Contrary". Now I'm REALLY embarrassed. redface
