So now other artists whom I wouldn't normally listen to are taking on this idea of by-passing the record companies, it'll give me an opportunity to see such a promotion as a casual listener and also see how it'll affect my view of that artist's music.

Radiohead's latest idea has encouraged me to download their album whereas I would never have bought it had it been released in the 'traditional' way. As much as I loved The Bends and OK Computer, I didn't buy any more because I felt I'd be buying more of the same thing and there's a depressive element to their music that I felt I could only listen to so much of.
I downloaded In Rainbows and I love it. So there you are - it's worked for this listener. Although I downloaded it for free to start with, I downloaded it again for £5 after and so paid them £5 more than I would have done if the album had been released through a record company.

And now Ray Davies, who's album I wouldn't have bought purely because I would have never even have heard it was out and frankly, wouldn't really normally care for, is going to be giving it away. So I'll be able to give it a listen and will have the opportunity to see whether I like it or not. And if I like it, I might then delve further into his and The Kinks back catalogue... And as he says himself in the BBC article; it's exciting for him to see his music given away to 1.5 million people.

For music lovers who like to listen to new stuff, this could be the start of a great trend.
