I actually listened to a British band today, something that I don't do that often. The band in question was 'Light Of The World'. [Edited 10/3/07 13:10pm] It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

On the merits of the work itself, many bands could and/or should be in the conversation. My favorite is Jamiroquai. But "favorite" doesn't always parlay into "greatness."
On the other hand, if "great" is used in the context of legacy or stature, no bands I can think of can approach The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. Can someone convince me otherwise? [Edited 10/3/07 15:08pm] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Come Dancing is my favorite song of theirs.
Also like "Apeman", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" "Death of a Clown" and "Dead End Street"

I guess the Beatles, Stones, Who, Cream, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc. are all too obvious choices? I'll just list off some of my favorite brit bands over the decades (apart from the aforementioned)
The Jam The Clash The Kinks King Crimson Motorhead Thin Lizzy (Ok they were Irish, but...I'm a risk taker )

They're quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. I bought Village Green, expecting high energy garage rock.
I was slightly disappointed at first, but soon came to realize that they were about as close to the Beatles as I could get (without actually copying them). Great melodic songs with intelligent lyrics & weird humor. Classic 60's pop. Excellent! So I picked up Lola, Arthur, Something Else, and Muswell Hillbillies. I'm hooked. Definitely one of the most overlooked legendary bands, at least here in America. My Legacy

Greatest band ever:
To me they are the band that did the most things right, the most of the time. Most totally exciting, most innovative, most powerful force in rock history. After 1975 it gets a bit dodgy but that's a ten-year run of total excellence. And even with only half the band, they're still a force to be reckoned with onstage. Beatles & Stones & Kinks are excellent, don't get me wrong. But the Who speak to me personally in a way that no other band ever has.

The who probably tops their peers Beatles Stones & Kinks in terms of individual musicianship (with the possible exception of vocals--Beatles had some really strong vox). Definitely the greatest "band" though I wouldn't have them as my favorite music makers. Certainly no slouches in that department, either, though. My Legacy
