Joni & Chaka land high on the Billboard 200... ...at 14 and 15 respectively, 40k to 39. Their highest placings in, oh, around 30 years!
Perhaps there's hope for the world after all.

When i told them yeah they asked me to burn copies for them.. I lied and told them that my pc wasn't working and offered to pick them up their own copies and they were more than happy to give me the money

Here is the question...Who will sink more next week? In both case it was probably mostly old hardcore fans that really picked up the CDs (especially with Chaka, since this was kind of a return to form). I can't say for sure but the Starbucks thing helps Joni (especially at this time of year...I don't really go into Starbucks during the summer but when Fall comes and they start with with Pumpkin stuff and the wheather gets warmer....I'm there!).

I think thats really true of anyone, more with much older artists, but i did hear more press on Chaka this time around than any other in a long time, Joni i feel has the luxury of just having her cd front and center in a place where people go, ALOT of people go. I feel Starbucks is the best thing for alot of artists, most of them in fact at this point, since radio is a dead issue and video play, well we know that wont happen for either lady or anyone over 25 quite frankly, unless its a stupid reality show., "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

"Angel" gets a good amount of play on Sirius "Heart and Soul" station. I know Detroit has at least one station with a similar light R&B approach (actually, Heart And Soul isn't Urban AC strictilly but they don't play hip-hop crap). Satelitte can be the future and it certinatly is helping people discover (and rediscover) good music.

However, these two are selling to an older audience that isn't as obsessed with getting to the store to buy something the first week, and are more prone to word of mouth sales. "Oh, that's out now? I'm gonna get to the store to pick it up in the next few days/weeks." Albums by artists like these have more legs than your standard 90% sales drop in week 2 super-hot contemporary artists.
