The first 3 albums ("Emergency On Planet Earth"-"Return of the Space Cowboy"-"Travelling Without Moving") are by far their best albums. Their fourth album ("Synkronized")is pretty good too. Once you listen to the first 3 albums, you will see that Funk Oddysey and Dynamite are not very good.....

I'll agree with his statement about the band and its music. The first 3 were definitely the funkiest. I mean, they really had that acid-Funk sound down to a science. But then Jay decided to move to Disco. rolleyes

I once said here in the music forum that Jamiroquai was one of the last great funk bands. I did upset quite a few people with that. lol

I didn't care for their 90s stuff at all. It was too damn slow. "A Funk Odyssey" and "Dynamite" are definately my favorite because they switched to disco. It don't get no better than disco, period.

and what's wrong with disco? lol It's certainly funkier and more danceable than most of the shit hop crap that dominates the charts these days.

Nothing is wrong with disco. Disco may have died in 1979, but it's because of disco's influence, that all the hard uptempo funk jams were made in the early 80s. Funk in the 70s before disco was slower and more jazzy. Funk in the early 80s after disco was faster and more danceable. It's when people started slowing the tempo down in the late 80s and getter further and further away from disco, that music as a whole became fucked up.

A lot of times, folks don't like disco because it has been stereotyped as "gay music".....which is really another reason to love disco. lol

Nah, gotta disagree, they've gone downhill since Too Young Too Die, all their stuff since then has been done b4, just a glorified disco band now.

I love Jamiroquai. My favourite is probably the one with Travelling without moving. Actually he´s got many great albums.

It's my standard reply to a Jamiroquai thread, but...

They/he are as shit as fuck.

Every song sounds identical and Jay Kay is one of those people who I pray gets throat cancer very soon (up there with Mariah Carey and James Blunt).

Hopefully, he'll lose the use of his hands and tongue too so that he cannot write any more music*

Good LORD.
you "pray he gets throat cancer".
Really.

I hope you do that, because i'm a BIG believer in karma.
so please do that.

and Jamiroquai's one of those groups that i don't need to sound differently. Like Massive Attack. Like Lenny Kravitz. I like their sound for a reason, and i don't want to them to stretch out and do weird shit. I don't care if every Jamiroquai song sounds the same, he keeps making records and i'll keep buying them.

Jamiroquai is like a modern-day Chic....or a modern-day Heatwave. These types of bands never forget the importance of a good groove.

I agree with the general consensus:

Their first 3 albums are ESSENTIAL to anyone's funk collection. After that, yeah, they did go a bit cheap disco/poppy/commercial for my liking. I would even say that their last album Dynamite was a bit of a disaster, musically. But there's still one or two good tracks on each album. They're still a fantastic live band!

I don't think 'Dynamite' is one of their best albums, but the highlights are really impressive. You can tell that they really tried to branch out a little. The hard-edged "Feels Just Like It Should" is probably the funkiest jam they ever did.I suspect that this song was created to silence those folks who complain that their music has become "too disco"."Seven Days In Sunny June" is also a pleasant departure from the disco stuff. It's a melodic,old-fashioned soul/R&B song...easily the strongest single they released this decade.Again, this song proves that they are so much more than just a modern-day disco band. The loud, rocking "Black Devil Car" finds them rocking out like never before.

I guess we're in the minority, lol.I actually prefer the two disco-sounding albums ('Synchronized' and 'A Funk Odyssey') to the first two albums that everyone loves so much.I didn't even become a Jamiroquai fan until 'Synchronized' came out in 1999.I was in a record store and they were playing the album. As soon as I heard the first two tracks "Canned Heat" and "Planet Home",I was hooked.I couldn't believe that a modern-day band was making music like this! It's as if they were totally ignoring hip-hop and the 90s in general, instead making music as if we were still in 1978.I found it very refreshing.I asked the clerk who it was and she handed me the CD,which I immediately bought.I've been a diehard fan ever since.

and to those folks who think Jamiroquai is nothing more than just a modern-day disco band, check out this live performance from 2003:

They're performing an unreleased track called "Shoot The Moon" at the Montreux Jazz Festival. As you can see, these guys are all about real musicianship. The departure of Stuart Zender hasn't changed that.In concert, they're still amazing. They still add alot of jazz and funk to their set.

I'm not really hating on Disco. I like some Disco myself (like Chic and Heatwave). But I felt they sounded much better when they were into the deeper Acid Jazz/Funk of their first 3 albums. I don't think their last 3 albums were complete rubbish, but I don't think they're as strong as the first 3. As long as Jay keeps that Jazz Fusion element in their sound, Jamiroquai will never sound completely bad.

The fact that artists these days don't make anything similar to disco, is the reason I shit on them like I do. It was because of disco that I got into funk in the first place because it was the closest sounding thing to disco after it's death. After funk, there was house. After house, that was it....the end.....nothing good being made, period. Disco was my first love and actually, if you really think about it, 90% of what I've listened to since then has been something to replace it.

People say there's good new music out there. Is it something with the fast tempo, funkiness, and danceability of disco? If not, then like I've said before, there's no good new music out there these days. lol

So "Synchronized" is another disco type album? I've got to get that one.

Yeah, that's what I like about their last two albums. It's like they completely erased the 1990s altogether. Oh, if it were only that easy to erase the 90s. lol

The jazz on the earlier albums is what I don't like. I like the disco and funk only with nothing else except maybe a little rock. No jazz, no accoustical, no shit hop, no country, etc.....just straight up disco/funk/rock. Hell, even when Prince started doing all those different things was when I wanted to slap him upside his head. I was much happier with him from 1978-1984. Yeah, I like other genres but I want my disco and funk hard and not mixed with anything else. lol
