Its hard to find good female acts that have quality material
I mostly listen to male cause the industry is still male dominated...
When your a female they're usually too diva-ish or too slutty...
VBut i listen to quite a bit
Joni Mitchel, Kate Bush, Lennon Murphy, Alanis Morrisette (Ie God), Joan Osbourne, Annie Lennox, Billie Holiday, Ellza Fitzgerald, Bjork , Bonnie Raitt, Susan tedeschi...

I'm actually quite surprised at the overwhelming preference for male artists here.

hmmm I think women, by far, show more depth, vulnerability and risk-taking in their writing lately. And more convincing emotion in their vocal deliveries. I dunno -- male performers (though certainly not all) just seem more disingenuous to me. And those who do give up much of their souls come off... er... well, wierd and overmedicated. smile

I do prefer male instrumentalists, however. There's just something about raw male energy and that occasional lack of refinement that is really liberating.

75% female. I always thought it was a sexual attraction thing--that I listen to mostly women because I feel they are singing to me, like mythical sirens. I don't want to hear some dude singing he wants to lay me. One of my friends countered that I listen to mostly women because the woman inside of me is trying to get out. confused

When it comes to attending concerts, the ratio jumps to 90% female or female-fronted bands. My next ten concerts:

Björk
Nellie McKay
Kate Nash
The Pipettes
The Donnas
Tori Amos (2x)
Regina Spektor
Van Hunt
Rasputina
My Brightest Diamond

See? Female musicians turn me on. razz

I listen to mostly male funk bands. Come to think of it, the majority of the females I listen to usually have men behind the scenes pulling the strings such as Donna Summer with Georgio Moroder, Vanity 6 with Prince, The Mary Jane Girls with Rick James, or many of the disco and house divas who have men behind the scenes writing, producing, and playing instruments.

Women who are in charge usually make much slower, weaker, "emotional" music (yuck). Whenever I hear a female artist say....."I got a lot more involved on my upcoming album".....I know it's going to be an album full of slow shit. Although Patrice Rushen and Klymaxx are female artists that stand out and excel.

Sounds like somebody is going through some "emotional" issues.

Since I prefer musicians who play an instrument most of what I listen to is by male artists. Still, I really treasure a woman who has a strong command of her axe (Meshell) or can forcefully lead a band (Macy Gray).

Mostly male artists, but the women I do listen to, I love intensely.

I'm not sure why, but a lot of "girl" music leaves me cold. It's like women's magazines and women's movies and women's books and women's televison shows. (insert apostrophes as appropriate) So much of it is sappy and trite and stupid, or focused on snagging a man and pumping out babies.

Old school-definitely males
All the funk bands were dominated by males
As funk was replaced by buttons and lame producers i started listening to
more females but 70% of my music is still old school.

yeah, I take it back to the funk days too, because you had a mixture of ladies and men to hear on the songs and the songs were a lot more fun. nowadays the men rap and sing about the same stuff and the ladies are whining about someone who wasn't meant for them and can't move on. so I go back

You post every time this is dicussed here, just like when it comes to which artists you have seen live in concert wink.
Anyway, for me it's the other way round, I prefer very much to listen to male artists. And I don't think it's because of my male side in me giggle.

I feel I have to post because so many people prefer male artists and I want to let female artists out there know that they have my full support.

The concert threads are easy to post on since it's just cutting and pasting my list which I have saved. smile

Well i have to say looking at the longtime artists i follow that its mostly male. But despite the industry being male dominated, it really functions because of female artists. With Female artists, labels use them always to sell, especially this time of the year, take a look at your 4th quarter heavy hitter releases, Kylie,Mariah,Britney,Celine,Jlo,GirlsAloud,Nicole S,Beyonce,Hilary,Mya and possibles from Aretha,Madonna and Whitney. On the male side, Barry Manilow and Bruce Springsteen with a possible Elton John release. Not to mention ladies like Annie Lennox,Jewel,Chaka and Joni on the way, though those may not be huge sellers, they still get people into the stores. So i think for me its been leveling off between the two, and the female genre is wider for me because i can listen to the new Ann Wilson or Joni or Chaka and still get into the new Amerie or Mya. With Male artists, they pretty much have to have something to offer at this point to me artistically like a John Mayer or Van Hunt for me to even get into them, i tend to stick with the male artists i grew up on that still put out music.

Female artists need more exposure. You certainly won't hear them on rock radio. It's remarkable that Paramore and Flyleaf have top 10 hits now at the same time on rock radio. And those bands aren't even good.

See that's the thing.... I know they are out there but I guess it's up to me to hunt for them and I just don't have the energy or motivation to do so.

I did a survey of my CD collection once and it came out 60% male, 40% female, something like that. But I feel much closer to the female artists, like I listen to learn from them -- what do they have to tell me? I think if I counted the hours I listen to male vs. female it might be 30% to 70%. I do like the guy thing though...that sexy guitar stuff. drooling

I prefer female musicians, but my total music collection is probably only 60% female and 40% male, just because its easier to find men who are making the kind of music I want to hear, but the women are out there just not getting any media attention sad

I advise everyone who is looking for some really good female artists check out the links sextonseven posted.
