you aren't too Popular with Me today.Rick James might not have a Great or Good Voice but I can think of a Million Worse Duets than anything Rick has duet with easily.Rick is one of My-All-Time Favorite Artists Ever, but I shouldn't be Shock you are the Person who Champions Bruce Springsteen??Rick James and Smokey Robinson "Ebony Eyes" Rick James and Chaka Khan "Slow Dancin'" I think Rick James is a horrible singer who oversings on ballads. Being "poular" with a fellow p.orger +0.0001 Having Rick James as an "All-Time Favorite Artists Ever" +1 Totally missing the point I made about Bruce Springsteen AND bringing it up again!! -500 Total points -498.999 Funny how you're tossing GC into the argument when we're talking about duets. That's supposed to hurt my feelings? I know Clinton's voice is hoarse. You ain't telling me nothing new. When have you heard GEo. Clinton sing a "give up the panties" ballad like Rick James? ANSWER NEVER. I ain't really into choosing one artists' music over another because an imagined fanboy competition. I like whomever I like because I do. Though, given a choice, as I was recently, of paying to see Rick James or George Clinton's band I chose PFUNK and really only went out of my way once to see Rick James (tix were free). I don't dig listening to his tortured, strained singing on ballads. Surely you don't place Rick in the mix with PRysock and Wilson? James, like GC, is best at singing funk ditties cuz he just can't sing those ballads. Now there are plenty of bros in PFUNK who can sing those songs like Paul Hill, Garry Shider, Steve Boyd, Lige Curry as well as a few outstanding female singers too! I'm not getting IN this, but, I really like the vocals all over I don't remember the name, I think its on "The Clones of Dr Funkenstein" "I'm liking the things you do...the way you move your sexy bo..day..." -------------------------------------------------

Actually ,George was a good singer in the early days.I have a CD called "Testifyin" that contains some of his early pre-funk doo-wop type stuff. He does a really nice version of "Ice Melting in Your Heart" ,a song he later gave to "The Brides" "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

The tune is "I've Been Watching You (Move Your Sexy Body)" and the singer is Glen Goines. He died in 1978 of complications due to hepatits-c and also recorded the QUAZAR albums with PFUNK alumnus drummer Jerome "Bigfoot" Brailey (later founded MUTINY). Many beleived Glen would have had a career to equal Luther Vandross if he had survived, his voice was really that good! test

JPG = jpeg format you'd upload a pic for your avatar. You're showin' your ass, son! All I've dissed is Rick's horrid balladeeringstyle I'm a tremendously huge EWF fan, but I certainly have my criticisms of their poppish-disco style (despite their stengths in afro-jazz), but that's not relevant here on this thread. As per PFUNK being old. I'll gladly delve into a music with some history and traditon behind it. I love jazz and blues for that very reason. It's quite stupid to try to dog PFUNK to build up Rick James and EWF. They all come out of the same bag. Any fool could see that, can't you? I don't know what kinds of show you actually get out (if any!) to see nowadys, but I've seen both EWF (2x) and PFUNK (18x) in the past 3 years. They're both doing mostly oldschool rehash shows. PFUNK, however, is attracting more of a younger crowd than EWF. Lots of college-age white kids are diggin into PFUNK and finding they love the hard-funk groove. Not that I'm knocking EWF, but they don't really do a jamband style that would attract young adults. EWF's show is more like something you'd take a date along and cuddle up and get all romantic and shit. Now I'm outta here cuz your silliness bores me. You're talking about Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson, though I think the song's pretty good...certainly not a "worst duet". But, to each his/her own!!

Firstly, I don't speak for PFunkjazz, but my interpretation of PFunk's post was that many people from different backgrounds go to see a PFunk show, including a lot more Whites. Whereas before Hard Funk, as I like to call it, was a style that most Whites weren't into during the the genre's heyday. The very fact that many people of different backgrounds and of different generations are going to see PFunk 30+ years after their first recordings is a testament to their timelessness. Not to mention those of the hip hop generation, who have sampled them to death. Of course this isn't a PFunk phenomenon. They're just included in that group of artists that are still relavent musically speaking after years and years. In terms of Hard Funk they set the standard.
Secondly, "Automic Dog" (which I'm sick of) is a George Clinton solo song. You can't exactly blame that on Parliament/Funkadelic in my opinion. Clinton solo could never be what the PFunk empire is as a whole. Thirdly, I don't think PFunkjazz was knocking EW&F. To tell you the truth, although the comparisons to both groups aren't exactly apples/apples, what both groups did is equally valid regardless of which routes they took. PFunk wasn't into the Afro/Cuban Jazz like EW&F was, and EW&F wasn't exactly into the Hard Funk, Rock, and outer space concepts that PFunk was into. It doesn't mean one was "better" than the other, it means they were both different. Both groups had some of the best musicians you'll find. They just had different methods of getting their Funk and message across. Fourthly, as far as Rick James' stage show goes; there are issues to take with both Rick and G. Clinton. I don't know if it's happened recently, but I've heard people who I know and don't know say that Clinton has smoked crack onstage. WHAT year/tour this was, I don't remember. I didn't believe it when I heard people I didn't know say so, but once a close friend of mine told me about it...and Rick's problems onstage have been documented in reviews lately too. I didn't think it could be as bad as it was written about till 2 different co-workers of mine went to see him at different gigs and said his show was terrible and they said he acted as if he still had a drug problem. Fifthly, who cares about attracting new fans??? That's partly the way you know music is timeless. The Beatles recently released album of #1 hits that sold well weren't all bought by their baby boom listeners that grew up with them. The fact that the younger generation goes to shows by a group that started their career before these folks were born says a lot. It happens at Prince shows too, although he's been an underground music maker for the last several years, the generation younger than him still holds his back catalog in high esteem. And you know what? Most of them come from his latest shows loving his newer music too - if they knew nothing about it before. These artists still attract those of a different generation because their music is timeless. This does NOT mean I don't think EW&F's music isn't timeless, I do. And I also think they should have been inducted into the HOF sooner than they were instead of having to wait a little longer. Lastly, considering the giants that they are, I don't think you'd even bother to criticize Parliament/Funkadelic in any way had it not been that PFunkjazz criticized Rick James. But since he did, it seems PFunk (the group) was an easy target. Both EW&F and Parliament/Funkadelic covered a lot of musical territory. Most artists that do tend to have timeless music. My collection would be missing something without either of their contributions to music. But I do think both groups attract a different type of crowd OVERALL - not totally different, just overall. Cut me... [This message was edited Sat Oct 12 18:07:11 PDT 2002 by Supernova] This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
