Sad news. While not a big fan of his music, I certainly respect Joe Zawinul for his contributions to music in general. His 'In a Silent Way' is obviously a peerless classic for starters. And he always had great taste in band members imo and knew his jazz.

Indeed. I wasn't the biggest fan of Weather Report, but I had mad respect for them since they paved the way for Jazz fusion.

RIP Joe. sad

Oh No sad bawl

Not another one.

I saw him in Detroit in 2005 at our annual jazz festival and he was burning the stage up with the Syndicate.

May God's peace be with his soul.

I was at that performance, too. sad

R.I.P. pray

I just remembered a story Quincy Jones once told Arsenio Hall about Zawinul. Back when Joe was playing with Dinah Washington, they all went to dinner over at Dinah's house...and among other things, she served some down-home cooked Greens, which Joe, being from Austria, had never had...so after dinner, Zawinul came over to Quincy and some other guys and said, "Man, that's the best damn Spinach I ever had in my Life!!" lol

nod One of their best!

That reminds me of another Zawinul story that Narada Michael Walden told in the book (everybody's got Zawinul stories, Lol!)...Narada was brought in to play on "Black Market", but was about leave to start a solo career, and Jaco was just coming into the band. Zawinul was impressed with Jaco's chops, but on one tune, "Cannonball", Jaco started to show off a little, and Joe said, "Don't Play all that Shit on my Song!...You gotta understand, this song is a tribute, this is for Cannonball(Adderly)...and I'm gonna call it "Cannonball", or else I'm gonna call it "Empty Chair"..."

lol

also BTW,
if you can find it, WaxPoetics magazine did a great article on Joe, back in 2004 (Issue # 9): It focused on his love for the electric piano and the synthesizers he used back in Weather Report's heyday, especially the ARP2600...

I'm wondering if they'll do an update, or at least a reprint...
