WHITE CHALK: So the PJ Harvey Fams do not talk about the album that has leaked! Read my painful review inside And u call yourself PJ fans!
The new album is not bad...still it's not Kate Bush in terms of brilliance. My review of the new wannabe album in a moments [Edited 9/7/07 11:19am]

Track 1
The Devil Piano...PJ sings higher than usual. Seems like Marienne Faithfull...60's. Nice Tune. I like it. It's not Kate Bush or Tori.

Track 2
Dear Darkness PJ's voice sounds sweet...almost like a whisper...almost childish. The Tori-esque Bee Side rip-off. Time to skip to another tune... Oh...there's a male voice...and an angelical choir...WAIT...Joana Newsom moment... HELP ME! MY EARS!!!!

Track 3
Grow Grow Grow Radiohead intro...remember the Pyramid Song...but worse. Remember those bulgarian chicks that Kate Bush used on The Sensual World album...well PJ tries to do like them...with only her voice. It's not a bad song... Time to skip The melody is great in this one. I predict the PJ fams to whore and love this song for times to come.

Track 4
When Under Ether I like this one. Sweet song. The lyrics are nice. The arrangment is fine. Still it's not Kate Bush. I may listen to this song in the new future. She should have got Nick Cave to duet with her on this one. Skipping time...but these songs are so small in terms of length. This one is 2:26

Track 5
White Chalk Damm...the title track. Until now the less piano song of the album. Reminds me of Arcade Fire with a deadly dose of Xanax. Frankly it's not bad. She's trying to be a great artist. It's PJ trying to Tori during the Scarlet's Walk Era. I think I will not skip this one...

Track 6
Broken Harp Starts acapella...wait...there's an Harp! WTF! This is a Joanna Newsom rip-off! Skips...

Track 7
Silence I like this one. It's a great song. Very uptempo. She did a nice vocal arrangement on this one. "I free myself..." [Edited 9/7/07 11:07am]

Track 8
To Talk To You OMG! It's the longest song the album. 4 minutes... She sounds like an Orca whale... Skips...for sanity!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Track 9
The Piano I like this one...it reminds me of Thom Yorke and Björk in a box. Very Vespertine like...then it blows "Oh God I miss you..." Maybe until now the song I enjoyed the most...I will not skip this one. Oh and the lyrics are fab.

Track 10
Before Departure Nothing to declare on this one. "Farewell my friend..."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Track 11
The Mountain Thank the lords of Kobol...the last song the album! Horrible song...Ripple efects on the song. Vomit inducing...

Well, it's not a bad album...but it's not great. She tries to hard to be...something she'll never be. But she has the guts and the balls.
Small album...only for fans. For a better experience try the real stuff:

That's interesting because PJ Harvey never reminded me of Kate Bush. More like an artsier version of the early Pretenders, with all the odd time signatures and chunky guitars and venom.
None her albums are good all the way through but a well-picked compilation pulling from all of them is as potent as anything I can think of. I'm sure I'll buy this, even surer I'll see her LA gig.

Often imitated, never duplicated, that's for sure! Thanks for the review... "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

PJ Harveys fans on her forums are a little more enthusiastic about the new material. I have heard two songs and short clips of all the other songs and they sound great to me.
Sorry, but comparing PJ Harvey to Kate Bush is even dumber than constantly comparing Tori Amos to Kate Bush.

damn, this is one fine album. i wouldn't call myself a huge
pj harvey fan but i always check her albums out an usually, i enjoy them a lot. i love this newly developing trend of artists releasing cds that are actual albums again and not a collection of songs, filling up 78 minutes of disc space. short, well crafted albums that conjure a certain feel and atmosphere. songs that sit well and complement each other, instead of a good album weighed down with stuff that reels all over the place to pack in something for everyone and a radio friendly single. this album feels intimate and warm and above all, honest. some of the lyrics are just painfully personal and i like that. it makes the whole thing feel heartfelt and warm. not much thought on the individual songs yet but as a whole i love the disc to bits already after just 1 full listen. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

First off, if you guessed that this album was sung from the perspective of a corpse, you're dead as a spot on! Now go find a copse of rotting, decaying oak trees, and communicate with some lost souls.... and you're more than halfway there! (Tree huggin' lumberjackin' mimsies need not apply) Apropos, for us yanks, cuz I reckon it's sho' nuff soon gon' be harvest time enough already! For further study, watch The Others, The Sixth Sense, Stir Of Echoes, and Ghost Story. I hope y'all know it's spooked out, mon. C'mon board for a haunted hayride, a walk through an eerie forest. and the unforgettable opportunity to experience 'walking the plank' off of a real ghost vessel into a dead sea, don'tcha know! It's a pastoral, of course, so bring the whole fam!
Jack a Lantern, Light a Candle, Manx 'WaterbALLs' Coleman...who're you trying to tempt..., BETH? PS -Respond within 20 minutes for free tix to a fully paid weekend of witch hunting, water dunking, Oktoberfest brewout excitement! Bring your sisters, daughters, mothers, and infants! 1-877-Pajamas!!! ??? [Edited 9/9/07 1:10am]

Well, the album cover looks like one of theose pics where they would sit up deceased to take pics of them back in the 1900's. Weird pics those are, creepy.
