After the Britney disaster, do you think the music industry will begin to change favoring true talent over image? I came of age during the MTV generation whe they A: actually played videos and B: Actually played artist with talent like Prince, Michael Jackson, Pat Benatar, Tina Turner, The Police, Boy George, George Michael, and Lionel Riche to name a few. I will even give mention to Madonna and Janet Jackson, though they are no comparison vocally to the artist I've just mentioned, but were entertaining nonetheless. The Britney Spears VMA disaster and lets not forget Ashlee Simpson on SNL seems to blow the cover off of image over talent artist of today. Any time a talentless bimbo like Paris Hilton can get a record deal and a crack head like Amy Winehouse is being toued as some musical innovator, the music industry has definately lost its credibility. They're a few who i find talented today like mary j blige, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Christina Aguliera(the ones who sell big numbers) and artist like India, Jill Scott, Fantasia, Angie Stone and many other artist who are powerhouse vocalist and talent musicians who NEVER get much airplay and will Never be seen on MTV. What do the orgers think? "POOR IS THE MAN WHO'S PLEASURES DEPEND ON THE PERMISSION OF ANOTHER" Madonna

I don't know what she did because I don't keep up with these bullshit current artists. However, whatever she did, it's not going to change anything. Andy is a four letter word.

Hell no.
And I really don't view what happened with her as a disaster. She had been through whole lot in the past year and the fact that she tried to pick herself up and start again should have been applauded instead of made fun of. But, everyone likes to make themselves feel better by putting someone else down.

She clearly was not ready for a big show like that. I, like many people were cheering her comback, and she disappointed everyone , but especially herself. Yes, she has been through alot in the last year-I get it. But when you have a performance that has the potential to make or break the rest of your career, you do not get pissy drunk at a night club the night before, her hair and costume should have been worked out days before the show, and she should have rehearsed her ass off to shut of all the naysayers. She has no one to blame but herself. If you are not ready, dont perform yet. Kanye was right when he said MTV exploted this troubled girl for ratings knowing it was going to be a trainwreck. I did not start this thread as a topic for Britney Spears.(there is another if you want to post about her) This topic is about the music industry and where its going. True talent versus image is neither here nor there 2 the music industry, they will promote whatever turns a profit. Sad, but true. Listen to me on The House of Pop Culture podcast on itunes http://itunes.apple.com/u...d438631917

As long as these no talented pop"tarts" or "princeses" make money for the record companies, then they probably won't be going away anytime soon! It's sad when you think about it. The general public are the ones that drive this crap that the record companies want to promote as music! I mean, as many people that were outraged with that so-called comeback performance...there were just as many who had nothing but sympathy and support for her. Even though it was obvious she never had talent to begin with. As crappy as that performance was (she didn't even sing for that matter) there will be a lot of people who will run out and buy her album when it comes out. They will run out to buy it even though the VMAs showed that girl for the true mockery that she is. Until the music buying public can learn to distinguish true artistry from the junk then it will be around for awhile!...SAD!

No, Britneys trainwreck performance gave them their biggest ratings, I think this girl knows what she's doing, you get more press for doing 'bad' than good, everyone is so bitter, we're loving to watch people fall, a bit scary how much.

Actually I think the original post is onto something. There's gotta be something that marks a change in retrospect, and even if we don't know what the "change" in itself will bring along, I think the Britney performance from last weekend was a historical anti-pop moment.

No. Consumers have the power to change this but it's not going to happen. Most consumers are sheep. Shake it til ya make it

Well the times have changed, i really think people should look at the FULL picture. An artist like Del Shannon and the Dixie Cups are in the Rock N Roll Hall of fame for basically having one catchy song. I dont think the whole "image" thing will ever change until everyone in the world is BLIND. Right now you have people that wont buy or will buy an album because of the COVER? and you wonder why we get an Image concious media and record labels, the two are going hand in hand. I dont think labels will stop it because where do they draw the talent line, there are many more artists that have less talent than Britney do we drop them too? The Industry really comes down to 2 things, Performers and Artists, Britney would fall into a performer, Prince would be an artist.
