WEST: `I'M THE NEW MICHAEL JACKSON'

damn he's still talking...

Rapper KANYE WEST calls himself the new MICHAEL JACKSON - because he's the only current African-American star who can sell out stadiums. The super-confident Jesus Walks hitmaker boasts no hip-hop or R+B star can fill huge venues like he can. He says, "When I was on tour with Bono, he said, 'Nobody from your community has ever figured this out, except for Michael Jackson.' "He really did do stadiums. He really was that one. And I feel like I'm that one."

So... When is this individual going to shut up? Considering that he called himself and Justin Timberlake Prince and Michael Jackson of their generation, I suppose he considers Timberlake to be the new Prince. eek

As a long-time hip-hop fan, and yes, a person who's bought both of 'Ye's albums, I find it unfathomable that people would pay 70 bucks to see him strut around stage rapping. I wouldn't do that for 99% of rappers. At the end of the day, hip-hop is rhyming over beats. Why would I pay stadium money for a show I could see around the way for free?

He's nothing but a media whore. He's got to keep his name in the news somehow and he's also his own biggest fan, so nothing he says surprizes me. In fact, I find it all quite boring.

Who's to say he's wrong? After all, this is not an unreasonable statement to younger folk. And the business seems to pump these guys much more so than other arguably more talented artists.

I am one of the "younger folk," and his comments are laughable to me. Perhaps others disagree. You are right that the music business promotes these two much more than other artists who are more talented.

how about being yourself?? Why is everyone from the current generation trying to be the new this or that, how about being a leader. Also the keyword that Kanye said, "when i was on tour WITH Bono" so who was really packing those stadiums?? And also when has a stadium tour become the HOLY GRAIL all of a sudden, i find Stadium tours to be the worst possible thing, u cant see shit, most of the time the sound is shit, and really they seem to be vanishing, with the exception of reunion tours and the Stones. So his statement is typical for him, but for someone that is so FULL of himself, he never shows me anything original he keeps pointing to others past accomplishments and comparing himself to it, doesnt work. There is only ONE Michael Jackson,Prince,Madonna etc.. so everyone get off your tired asses and make your own legacy.

Its true. I dont mind artists saying IM Influenced by such and such, but saying you are the new anyone is just a smack in the face to that persons legacy, not an honor. I hear too many excuses made for Kanye with statements like this, what if Beyonce went around and said "Im the new Diana Ross, because i run RB" or if Mariah said "Im the new Aretha, because i know how to be a Diva", people would be sending them bombs in the mail and trashing them left and right everywhere they went.

To put this more in context, the other day i caught an interview with Jon Bon Jovi and he said "Wow we would love to be like the Stones and go on forever playing stadiums" now thats an Honorable statement, but if he would have said "we're the new Stones because we're the only band selling out stadiums" he would have been trashed.

Hmmmm,Let's see. Michael Jackson started out in the business when he was 10 years old, He fronted the most popular teen group of all time. His album Thriller is one of the highest selling of all time..... Yeah I think Kanye's success in the industry is equal to Michael's. rolleyes

If he's basing his comparison on idiotic quotes, then he might be onto something. Remember MJ's comments about sharing your bed with other people's children? Maybe Kanye feels that the more outrageous comments he makes, the more he can be just like Mike. lol

Apparently Kanye's ego has gotten so big he doesn't even recognize who he truly is. confused

And as for Michael being the only other black artist to sell out stadiums?

Need I remind you of:
Tina Turner
Prince
Janet
Whitney (when she was commercially hot)
Hammer
Destiny's Child

Etc., etc., etc...

Both Bono and Kanye are trippin'... rolleyes

Everybody plays the drama cards these days. He has a CD coming out. Its marketing time. That's all this is. Gone are the days of waiting for an artist to drop a CD. The younger generation has so many choices that people have to say in their faces and keep them talking just to keep interests up. Its a sad day to see Kanye resorting to this but he's always been a big mouth and you never know what he'll say, so why be surprised?

The even scarier thing, well for him that is, he doesnt even realize that he is diggin his own grave with this. Even industry people and just music fans talk about him in a way that has nothing to do with music, so you really dont know what he has done or created himself. He plays the HYPE card well, but i never hear people saying WOW that new Kanye song is great, i hear "Wow did you hear what Kanye said". This is clearly the HYPE generation, sadly almost no one will be remembering any of them.
