20YO: the forgotten album

My friend asked me if he could borrow 20YO,
I thought in my head whats that. Then it came
in my head after a good 5-8 seconds, (Iam usually good at remembering albums).
Ive not listen to it in a while and I dont feel that I need to.

I only remember S.E.X
Anyone else forgot this album, Iam not suprised I forgot it lol

Me too. It's just so hard to determine which album Janet did between 1986-1997 (Control, RN 1814, Janet, Velvet Rope) is the best.

Not for me. Rhythm Nation 1814 is the clear winner, then Control and Velvet Rope.

I agree. Rhythm Nation is Janet's best album by far.

not the "velvet rope" ? eek

as far as "20y.o." i initially only cared for half the album. then sort of had it on the backburner. now i really enjoy it. one or 2 songs are sort of bland for me, but over all i think it's more consistent than her last 2.

I like 20 Y.O. quite a bit, definitely more than Damita Jo! But I love All for You, and that album gets a lot of hatred as well.

I thought 20 Y.O. was pretty good, and it's very underappreciated IMO. Some songs on there are just wonderful.

I was really surprised that 20YO flopped the way it did, cause it was actually a decent album. It definitely wasn't her best album, for sure. But it was alot better than Damita Jo. I was even more surprised that "So Excited" bombed on Top 40 radio. That song was a great dance jam. That was probably the albums problem though..it was just alright, but nothing spectacular.

I think Janet needs to get away from trying to market to the mainstream audiences. Especially messing with urban sounds. Let's face it: Janet's never been an urban artist, and her voice doesn't suit the sound well. She needs to go back to making dance/pop music like she did in the past. I was listening to "Together Again", "Go Deep" and "Someone To Call My Lover" and paying attention to there instrumentations and production values..THAT'S the type of music she needs to go back to. The sounds suits her perfectly. If she wants to stay away from that though, she should really make a dance album, specifically one with alot of house music. The few times that she's messed with house has resulted in some excellent material.

I admired the second half of 20 Y.O. more because it's more on the mellow, smooth side and it seems to have a less commercial, trendy style, more in tune with what older audiences enjoyed. The first half, which comprises the first five tracks, is pretty good too, but it's very overproduced and it seems like it was just thrown together hastily.

As for it being a sort of tribute or celebration of her 20 years as a musical star ... it seems to do that by attempting to turn her music and sound into an imitation of what's popular today in R&B and pop, and that isn't appealing or necessary. That's what makes this album so weak among her fans. I still think 20 Y.O. was a quite consistent and decent album, that wasn't worth the wait nor hype because much of it wasn't cracked up as it should've been.

The showstoppers of this album for me was "Take Care", "So Excited", and "Enjoy". The weakest one was "This Body". The rest ranged from great, to good, to above average. Janet please try not to work with JD again!
