Backbeat-The history of the early Beatles, when they were five (if I'm not mistaken) Awesome soundtrack, by the way...

And I'm sure there are films about the early Rolling Stones (but it's very bad and I don't remember its title) and one film about Nirvana (directed by Gus van Sant, I don't remember its title, either)

By the way, the best film about a fictional band must be "The Commitments" that movie is sweeeeet!!!

Are we only talking about modern artists? If not, I want to throw in
"The Josephine Baker Story."

Wasn't there a TV movie about The Carpenters?

doh! I totally forgot about "24 Hour Party People". It's the story of the late great Tony Wilson and his impact on the music scene in Manchester, England. They feature stories about his creation of Factory Records and the Hacienda Club. They also have stories about the bands that Wilson made into stars: Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Durutti Column, New Order, and Happy Mondays.

I'm sorry, but I just can't settle for just one.

I forgot to mention the tragic story of the Sex Pistols bassist and that damn groupie that ruined his life.

You serious? confused

I understand that the storyline is a lil' bit patched up. But the acting is fabolous. in fact I think it was Halle's vehicle to stardom.

Lady Sings The Blues is another 1st class bullshit that has good acting too lol

Overall, one should always take these biopix with a grain of salt because once Hollywood gets a hold of somebody's life story,,,,sensualising becomes the main ingredient.

I think Halle Berry is a powerful actress.

Losing Isiah
Jungle Fever
Monster's Ball

Disagree with her acting in one of these films and you still have two others that are shining examples...

But this is IMHO. Feel free to disagree with, ohhh...The Screen Actors Guild. The Academy Awards. Roger Ebert.

Sometimes I think folks sh*t on Halle because she isn't black enough for some folks taste...(not that I am calling anyone here out on that...just an observation). and sure she makes crap films where she is horrible in them (ie, catwoman and her last couple films) but then so does Charlize Theron (ummm..Aeon Flux anyone?) and Nicole Kidman (ummm..Stepford Wives anyone?) but they don't get sh*t on like Halle does...expecially from within their communities (South African and Australia)...They are championed as pioneering actresses...but poor Halle gets sh*t on...again and again and again....

am i ranting? lol

Its a perfect "damn if she do, damn if she doesn't". Halle climbed the wall with her nails and teeth, and I sure as hell am not mad for her success,,,shit, its long overdue. She doesn't have to wait for people to give her the credit, she already earned that with the cost of 12 years in this biz.

As far as her highlight moment, to me its this one:

There was one film which was the story of the kids from the Partridge family, including David Cassidy. It was suppose to be narrated by the red-head kid.

What was funny about this film which was obviously based in the early 70s, apparently when the figures for the Partridge Family started to really go down the producer of the show tried to think of ideas to boost their figures. And one of their ideas was to introduce a member of the Jackson 5 into the show to become their adopted brother, it obviously didn't happen in real life lol

Great selection TA. This movie had one of the tightest soundtracks.

Crossroads, 1986 Robert Johnson

loosely based on the theme of a blues artist selling his soul to the devil and, more specifically, about a young white blues guitarist's search for Johnson's 'missing' thirtieth song (there are only 29 individual songs in Johnson's recorded repertoire). Johnson is played by Tim Russ, while Joe Seneca plays Willie Brown (a contemporary of Johnson's mentioned in the song "Cross Road Blues"). Some scenes in the movie are meant to portray moments in Johnson's career as flashbacks, e.g. a recording session at the very start of the movie, and a portrayal of the "selling his soul to the devil" - events which are part of the legend about him.

I skimmed through the earlier posts so sorry if any of these are repeats:

Early LA punk rockers The Germs are portrayed by the likes of Shane West and Bijou Phillips in the recently-premiered WHAT WE DO IS SECRET.

STONED, about Brian Jones.

There was that awful Hendrix movie a year or two ago that went straight to DVD.

There's about to be a movie about Joy Division - this'll be the second time the ones that are still alive get to see themselves played by actors in a movie, they're also in 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE.

Mike Myers is on-again, off-again to play Who drummer Keith Moon in an upcoming film, not sure whether the news says it is on agan or off again this week.

And there a couple of made for TV Beach Boys movies with actors playing the guys, but none of them are any good.

Most overdue for this sort of treatment IMO: Freddie Mercury.

The Five Heartbeats - The story of The Dells

I never knew that! Was it really a story about the Dells? I always thought it was just a dramatization about the rise and falls of black singing groups of the 60's and 70's.

It is. Not every facet of the movie was about the Dells except the fact the Dells had been "singing together since high school", that there were originally SIX members of the group and it shortened to five (hence the name "The Five Heartbeats") even though I think Eddie was a roadie or something and Bobby was an original member.

But it was a combination of the stories of:

The Temptations (Eddie's drug and alcohol abuse, Flash replacing Eddie as lead singer)
The Isley Brothers (in one scene, the Five Heartbeats are shocked to discover that the cover of their single was of a white couple romancing in the beach rather than the five black members of the group; the Isleys had a similar fate with their "This Old Heart of Mine" album)
Jackie Wilson ("Bird" is dangled from a balcony; Jackie was really dangled from a balcony by his manager)

Maybe one of the Dells' managers got killed and maybe the Dells were fucked around at the Apollo initially but it was a combination of a lot of R&B/soul groups back then really.

I want to add Leadbelly with Roger Mosely playing the famed folk/blues singer (I think it was 1975).

The brilliant "Me and My Shadow: Life With Judy Garland," by daughter Lorna Luft, was excellent. Judy Davis as Judy Garland was spot on! (Much better than Andrea McArdle's youthful attempt in 1978's "Rainbow." She was a much better 'Annie' than a Judy...)

Judy as Judy = phenominal!!!
