Beyoncé Tops VMA Noms

Aug 7, 1:31 PM EST
The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Beyonce leads the pop parade of nominees for the MTV Video Music Awards with seven nods, it was announced Tuesday.

Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" was nominated for video of the year, as was Timberlake's ambitiously cinematic "What Goes Around ... Comes Around," which co-starred Scarlett Johansson. Also competing in the category are Amy Winehouse's "Rehab," Kanye West's "Stronger," Rihanna's "Umbrella" (featuring Jay-Z) and Justice's "D.A.N.C.E."

Beyonce was nominated for female artist of the year and for her collaboration with Shakira on "Beautiful Liar."

West landed five nominations, including male artist of the year. He has often appeared prickly about losing awards, and on Tuesday he was still sore over being snubbed last year for his Evel Knievel spoof video "Touch the Sky." (In 2005, he did win best male video for "Jesus Walks.")

"I come to win. I don't come to lose," West told MTV Tuesday on "TRL," where the awards were announced. "I think there's some really strong competition this year."

Rihanna also received five nominations, propelled by her hit single, "Umbrella," which is up for "monster single of the year."

Also nominated for male artist of the year was Akon, T.I. and Robin Thicke. Rounding out the nominees for female artist of the year were Fergie and Nelly Furtado.

Amy Winehouse, whose album "Back to Black" was her second disc but her first released in the U.S., was nominated for best new artist.

She received three nods, including female artist of the year. In the best new artist category, Winehouse will compete with her compatriot Lily Allen, as well as Carrie Underwood, Gym Class Heroes and Peter Bjorn & John.

Up for best group are Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, Linkin Park, Maroon 5 and the White Stripes.

The 24th annual VMAs will be handed out during a live two-hour show on Sept. 9 in Las Vegas at the Palms Hotel and Casino. Only eight categories will be awarded on the broadcast. Performers will include Kanye West, Fall Out Boy, Amy Winehouse, Chris Brown, the Foo Fighters and Rihanna.

Timbaland will be the "maestro" of the award show, serving essentially as the evening's DJ. Last year, the Raconteurs played a similar role.

"By me being maestro," said Timbaland, "I am the show."

there is a rumour going around that Mariah will be debuting her new song as the opener for this show, but not sure if thats gonna happen. Good to see that Kanye and Timbaland still have their heads so far up their own asses im shocked they can even see. Also how can MTV have video awards when they really dont show any, a recent survey showed MTV shows 11 hours of videos in a 7 date period and thats counting TRL which is nothing more than an interview show, wow really sad, and Kanye says theres competetion WHERE???

Hmm. A 2 hour show. They are losing faith in it because it has always been a 3 hour show for about 20 years.

And everyone and their grandmother is having the award shows in Vegas.

The MTV Awards used 2 be special but now having it in a short time span at the same place as The Radio Music Awards and Billboard Awards is lame.

Surprisingly, the two normal places, Los Angles & New York would have been the surprise after the horrible ones in Miami where the humidity made every female with curly hair look like a cross between one of them troll dolls and a chia pet.

Thats because the ratings are awful for this show, theres all this hype and then its a joke. Remember when there were award shows and no hype and you watched and got blown away, those days are over. Airing only once? yeah maybe once that night.

It seems that way because the press release on the Billboard site says that the show will only air once on TV and then it can only be seen "'remixed by and for viewers' that differ substantially from the live telecast." I have a feeling they are going to just put it on their Overdrive website.

Just a quick fact to show how far MTV has fallen, there is this awards show that just aired on the Univision Network called PREMIOS JUVENTUD, its ratings for that one show were more than the last 3 MTV awards shows put together. And even more to make people think, its not even a major show in the Latin Market.

For real. The last good, entertaining "MTV Video Music Awards" was the one in "2000" when "The Wayans" (I don't care what anyone says about them. That "Macy Gray" parody was fucking hilarious. I can't believe the classic moment when she flipped them off. INDEED CLASSIC!!!!), Shawn & Marlon hosted it. That "Eminem" performance had some memorable tidbits.

"Californication" performance was top notch. Let's not forget that guy who ran up over the set behind the podium. "Britney Spears' Unforgettable Performance" with the see-through sheer-pant outfit. The monologue was fucking funny (Touching on the subject of "The Source Awards" that had happened earlier that year had me interested, alone), though not as funny as "Chris Rock's". And, last, but not least, the "Blink 182 Performance" to end the show.

Matter of fact, now that I think about it, that show was altogether was, indeed, a classic. DAMN!!! I wish I had taped it! Stupid me! Anyway, after that, I hadn't been as excited. The thrill was gone for me on "MTV" and the entertainment industry altogether. Those were the days. How ironic was it that the second millenium was the last culminating point in all of entertainment history? death hmmm

Edit: Damn, how I could I forget that "Sisqo" almost fell on his ass. lol

You are so right and I had that Macy Gray parody on tape but I think I taped over it. I wonder if it's somewhere on the net because I'd love to see when Marlon's wig caught on fire again falloff

I wasn't too fond of the 00 Awards. It had it's moments, but the 99 awards the year before were MUCH better. Anyone remember that one? It was FUCKING great!

I think the last memorable ceremony was the 2003 show. Chris Rock was fucking off the hook, and who the hell can forget Madonna's kiss with Brit? Christinas own performance with Dave Navarro was also good. After that, though, the following shows just sucked. The Miami shows were the worst.Last years were ok. Some good performances, but nothing that got me talking much the neXt day

Tell me you didn't say, "LAST YEARS TELECAST OF THE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS WAS OKAY!!!!". "IT" has to be "THE" worst night on television for "MTV" and for all of music entertainment to see....in history. Even MTV was starting to worry about where they were going as a network (I know, right? Took them half of a decade to figure that shit out!?!!?) when they picked "Jack Black". He was better when he was seen and not heard as a less obnoxious host on "The 2002 MTV Movie Awards". His monologue was the absolute worst from "ANY" awards show and there's a lot of bad award shows. I couldn't stand to watch it anymore. I was embarassed. "MTV" were deteriorating as it is, but I believe I gave up on them for the exact reason why I am ranting, right now: "The 2006 MTV Video Music Awards". A travesty, indeed. People screwing up their performances left and right, presenters trying a little too hard to be funny, subtle, or whatever the hell it is their job to do up their over the podium. Me not knowing who over half of the people in the building were didn't help much, either, as I hadn't watched music videos in a while.

"MTV" had showed that they were really pathetic by giving those exact people whom I had no idea who they were or had been, those moon men. I had seen "Panic at The Disco's Video" and it was alright. I wouldn't say it was award-worthy. But, then, I wouldn't really say that any music videos have been award-worthy for quite some time. Those moon men have went down in credibility, as far as I am concerned. The prestige has been "LLLOOONNGGGG" gone! But, that was because of the slow, deadly decline of the music "ART" and the constant rise of the significance of the music industry. I can see why someone would think that "9999" was somewhat superior to "The 2000 MTV Video Music Awards". I mean, they were both classics, in my mind. They were the last two displays of how a really great award show was/is supposed to be done. I'd still pick "The 2000 Video Music Awards" over "The 9999 Rendition" because I have more fond memories of that show. However, with "The 2003 MTV Video Music Awards", I don't remember jack doo-doo, but "The Madonna-Britney Kiss" to open the show.

Although, that will forever be crested in my mind as the last "TRUE" shock on "The MTV Video Music Awards", that didn't make it a great show. Hell, that didn't even make it a good or even decent show. I don't remember shit standing out but that kiss. Besides there's more to an awards show than just shock value (Although, that may/might be one of the biggest factors, sadly), which, in itself has been killed off, totally. I think that it was the state of music that turned me off. Nothing interested me that I didn't force interest towards myself from the music entertainment's "ARTISTIC VALUE" (Which had diminished, over the years, starting at "2001". Alhough, "Jamie Foxx" was a funny host for "The 2001 MTV Video Music Awards") point of view. I mean, let's think about it. All genres of entertainment were suffering a slow burn in quality. Movies were sucking, so naturally "The Oscars" began to deteriorate in quality.

Music was becoming disgraceful, so naturally, the same was to come for "The Grammys". Just about everything and everyone was losing it's/their touch. "MTV" was slowing parting ways with it's host of "TRL", "Carson Daly" who was off to make some bad nd/or even worse career choices than one could imagine (I mean, who really watches his late night talk show?!? I mean, "REALLY"!!!?!). I don't know whether to blame "MTV" and their embarkation of disregarding what its initiation and name ("Music Television") had imposed some twenty-six years ago for the demolishing decline of music entertainment's "ARTISTIC REVOLUTIONARY" aspect; or to blame music entertaiment's "ARTISTIC REVOLUTIONARY" decline, the build-up of bad commercialism, and the steady growth spurt of alternative sources/outlets for ways of receiving music ("P2P File Sharing"; which would give me partial blame as I partake in such activities.

See, I am not a hypocrite. However, I won't take responsibility for its overall effect on music's "ARTISTIC REVOLUTION") on the result of "MTV" deciding to turn the other cheek, giving less attention to what "IT" should be giving the most ("Music Television": What can I say? Isn't it ironic?) and showing/displaying more supposed "Reality T.V. Shows" and "Dating Game-Like Shows"!!!! Damnit! mad Sorry for the long post. It was just hard to express what I really wanted to. This is my "THIRD" time trying to post this shit and it shall ultimately be my last

They're a band from Geneva New York who blend hip hop verse with rock and 80s beats. They've been on the indie circuit for 7 years and signed to Fall Out Boy's label last year. They released that single "Cupid's Chokehold"
