ok, I ll ask one: When I started getting into Miles Davis, I was suprised at how many songs I recognized (especially samples that Diggable Planets used). What jazz artist do you think has been sampled in a way that still respects the integrity of their tunes?

What jazz artist do you think has been sampled in a way that still respects the integrity of their tunes? Ron Carter performed on some Low End Theory tracks. There's a compilation called "Tribe Vibes" (found on vinyl, mostly, for DJs) that contains edited songs sampled by Tribe. Some of the tracks found on the 3d volume include: Cannonball Adderley's "Walk Tall" sampled for "Footprints" Roy Ayer's "No Deposit, No Return" sampled for "Bonita Applebum" (remix) Ramsey Lewis' "Dreams" sampled for "electric relaxation" Cannonball Adderley's "Leo" sampled for "stepping it up" Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" sampled for "the love" I also know of the following songs used: R.A.M.P.'s "Daylight" sampled for "Bonita Applebum" R.A.M.P.'s "40 Days" sampled for "Luck of Lucien" to name a few. The fastest one is Bombs Over Bagadad by OutKast, mostly a jungle/D&B tempo of 160 BPM. It's too bad there are no rap artists or producers that are brave enough to increase the tempo (like miami bass of the late 80's & early 90's).

Makes you wish that samples were credited in the liner notes of many of those classic albums, esp. Pete Rock and CL Smooth's! Now that I think about it, I haven't been able to really place many of the songs in the Tribe Vibes 3 comp . . . Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Publishing companies are within their rights to authorize clearance and royalties, but it seems like maybe they're killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.
