Injoy by the Bar-kays I recently saw this cd at the wreckastow for about $20. I read a bit about it online and it's considered one of their break through albums. What is it like? I'm interested in checking it out. Anyone have this? Is it funky and uptempo??

yeah? it said in the description that was sort of their lead into the 80's sound with synths and the euro-moroder vibe. sounds like it's right up my alley but thought i'd ask here first. i may pick it up! | |

If "Move Your Boogie Body" isn’t one of the best calls to get your tired behind out of the chair and onto the dance floor, well, we don’t know what is. The Bar-Kays came to prominence, and also nearly to conclusion, as Otis Redding’s backup band at Stax. Made up primarily of studio musicians, the Stax/Volt doppelganger for the Funk Brothers was almost entirely wiped out in the plane crash that claimed the life of Otis Redding just as he was having his signature hit, "(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay." Upon regrouping, the Bar-Kays kept a fairly steady profile on the R&B charts as a primarily instrumental soul/funk unit. They accompanied Isaac Hayes on his breakthrough Hot Buttered Soul album, but gradually realized that their horizons would widen only if they branched into vocals. In 1971, they brought in Larry Dodson as their vocalist, and the following year they scored their biggest chart hit since Soul Finger. Flash forward to 1979: the Bar-Kays have departed their bankrupted label (Stax) for Mercury’s greener pastures. Actually, the pastures were lined with gold: all their Seventies Mercury albums (with one exception) went gold or platinum. Injoy leaped onto the R&B album charts explosively, reaching #2 (it hit #35 on the pop charts). Seamlessly amalgamating their earlier funk with the Euro-dance sounds being popularized by the likes of studio wizard Giorgio Moroder, the Bar-Kays set themselves up for half a decade of continued success with this album. Yeah, I think they have some synths in them. Not Prince sounding synths, but synths nonetheless. You've been watching "Soul Train" lately. They played "Move Your Boogie Body" about a month or so ago. They played it during the Scramble Board part and ended the song rather early. I would have to pull my DVDs to refresh my memory on which episode it was. Andy is a four letter word. | |

Only that "Move Your Boogie Body" is an uptempo jam and "Today Is The Day" is a decent slow jam. "Running In And Out Of My Life" is nice slow jam where they sing in a falsetto. I haven't heard the other songs. Andy is a four letter word. | |

IMO, "Injoy" was the album that established The Bar-Kays as a top-level funk band and fully shedded the "Stax sidemen" label that once defined them for a decade. There were some really strong songs on that album:
* "Move Your Boogie Body," a funk/dance floor anthem with the synth rhythm that reminds me slightly of Funkadelic's "(Not Just) Knee Deep;" * "Running In and Out of My Life," a ballad featuring lead singer Larry Dodson in a falsetto; * "Today Is the Day," another ballad that is a melancholy good-bye song; * "Loving You Is My Occupation" and "Up in Here," another pair of grooving sounds with chugging beats. To me Boogie Body has that One Nation Under A Groove feel to it...listen to that bass.. And I think that's Sherman Guy singin lead on Running In and Out of My Life, with Dobson providing the background vocals... Girl I'm On Your Side & More And More are 2 other great jams  | |

I wasn't referring to the bassline to "Move Your Boogie Body" but the synth riff that was the melody part. I looked through my liner notes of all the Bar-Kays albums I own and they never listed credits for each song individually, only collectively. Larry Dodson is always listed as lead vocals (Sherman Guy was never listed as a lead vocal for any particular song, just generally as "percussion and vocals"). Another song featuring that falsetto-style singing -- "I Can't Believe You're Leaving Me" on "Propositions" -- is never credited to Guy singing, just referring back to the general credit listing. If I'm not mistaken, The Bar-Kays made have "performed" "I Can't Believe You're Leaving Me" on a "Soul Train" episode and Dodson was the "lead vocalist." Since Dodson has been referred as the only person to be the lead vocalist on a Bar-Kays song and I've never seen a liner note stating anyone but Dodson was the lead vocals on a song, I'm inclined to believe it was Dodson singing "Running In and Out of My Life." However, it wouldn't shock me if that wasn't Dodson -- I always thought that key in which "Running" was performed sounded a little too odd for that to have been his voice. I agree; in general, it's hard to find any Mercury label Bar-Kays album printed. I was shocked when "Propositions" was released on CD a few years ago and I've yet to see albums like "Nightcruisin'," "Dangerous," "Flying High on Your Love," "Too Hot to Stop" and "As One" released.
