I DJ and I have seen all kinds...Laptop Sets, Effects processors, Vinyl, CD, CD "with the master toggle so the pitch doesn't mess up". etc. I no longer have any prejudice as to what a dj uses or doesn't. My interpretation of a good DJ is someone who plays good music, keeps the flow, and doesn't train wreck.

IMO, if you're a good DJ, it doesn't matter what you use to enhance your set.

I never pay attention to BPMs much. Finding two songs that go together is really something you have to have an ear for. You could find matching BPMs and the two songs still might not sound good together simply for the type of instruments used on each song.

A few years ago (when I had my own computer) a friend lent me some mixing software. I couldn't figure it out to save my life. The computer screen looked more like lines on a life support machine than a mixing board.

I would love to be able to figure it out though because I have heard some mixes that people have made on computers and they are absolutely flawless. The pitch never gets away from them for long stretches of time and they can make endless loops of breakdowns and mix them with other songs. I would be having a field day with something like that.

However, computers are NOT, I repeat....NOT for making actual songs. Musicians are for making songs. Leave the computers, mixing boards, and loops for the DJs where they belong.
