10cc - I'm Not In Love (1975) **
I'm not in love, so don't forget it. It's just a silly phase I'm going through. And just because I call you up, Don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made. I'm not in love, no no, it's because... I like to see you, but then again, That doesn't mean you mean that much to me. So if I call you, don't make a fuss - Don't tell your friends about the two of us. I'm not in love, no no, it's because... I keep your picture upon the wall. It hides a nasty stain that's lying there. So don't you ask me to give it back. I know you know it doesn't mean that much to me. I'm not in love, no no, it's because... Ooh, you'll wait a long time for me. Ooh, you'll wait a long time. I'm not in love, I'm not in love...

big boys don't cry big boys don't cry... I read that it says "be quiet, be poised and quiet" contrary to popular belief.

big boys don't cry big boys don't cry... I read that it says "be quiet, be poised and quiet" contrary to popular belief. ... Apparently a lot of people were hearing that...but according to the song's author and lead vocalist, 10cc's Eric Stewart, they were looking for some words to 'fill that empty instrumental section separating the two verses from the bridge, they got the studio's secretary, Cathy Redfern, to say the lines, "be quiet-big boys don't cry"', and had the last part of the line on a loop..... (from Performing Songwriter, December 2005) ... [Edited 7/10/07 8:51am] " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

Cinnie said: Good stuff! One of my all time favorites. I did a whole thread on it a few years back. It's got a perfect dreamy sound to it, and those 256 layers(!) of vocals intensify the feeling. They've got other good songs, but none compare to this one.

I figured out that it appears on a K-Tel compilation that my mom had so I'm wondering if this is some really deep-dish throwback for me, but I swear I *JUST* discovered this song. I even knew other songs of theirs before hearing this one and was already sold on them.

How's 'bout that when thinking of that "nasty stain that's lying there?"

Yes, I did know that (but probably failed to mention it before) And yes I do think of that frequently. I have a best of 10cc 1972-1978 and Sheet Music.
I'd like to see that old thread.

one of the best songs ever IMO, just so cynical despite being Lovely and soft. There is also an Amazing cover by Rick Springfield on his latest CD The Day After Yesterday, on that cd Rick covers songs that he always loved and wished he had written.
