Great song content on Cyndi's. Whereas, Madonna album wasn't much on lyrical song content and more on the groove with production from Nile Rodgers of Chic.

I've never really liked the LAV album. Some great singles, but overall, it doesn't hold up. Anything with Shoo-Bee-Doo on it is going to be knocked down a few pegs.

Clearly She's So Unusual. You can understand why critics thought Cyndi would outlast Madonna, based on these albums and Cyndi's greater live talents. Shame her two other 80s albums were so unremarkable. She didn't really come into her own recording wise until 1993's Hatful Of Stars, but it received no promotion. I'd never even heard of it until I stumbled on it in a shop 3 years after it was released. If I'd heard any of those songs at the time on TV or radio there's no doubt I would have bought the album, but how can you buy something when you don't even know it's there? The success of her greatest hits the following year showed there was still an audience for her, but her cloth eared record company totally missed the boat on her new material which was arguably the best of her career. Rant over.

I adore Cyndi. She would have done better in the 70s then in the 80s. She is the better musician but Madonna is the better entertainer.

Madonna is the better visual artist and manipulator of the media.

As far as entertainment goes, Cyndi puts on a much better live show as far as I'm concerned. One of the best I've seen.

You Don't Know is absolutely incredible. I love Unhook The Stars as well, but overall I don't think the album is as consistent as SSU and HOS though it would still have been a hit if her record company hadn't dropped the bat. Again, I heard nothing about this album at the time of release.

I've heard one track from her forthcoming album. It's called The Other Side and it's as good as anything she's ever done so I'm looking forward to that although I'm sure it will be a hassle trying to find it in shops. I also loved 2001's Shine, the song that is. I haven't heard the album as it was only ever released in Japan. Madonna's music nowadays does nothing for me so it's great to know Cyndi's still just as good now as ever.

I have to go with Cyndi Lauper's She So Unusual. I remember back in the day Cyndi was the "it" girl on MTV.They were playing her videos constantly. Then Madonna showed up with Like A Virgin and everybody remembers her debut on the MTV awards in that wedding dress.By the time Cyndi's True Colors album was released, it was pretty much all Madonna on MTV and everybody quickly forgotten Cyndi sad .

Artists like Cyndi and Blondie are the reasons why I never saw the bbig deal about Madonna. After experiencing Blondie and Cyndi who were truely original I just never got all the fuss about Madonna. And then I realize that the big deal about Madonna was that her talents were so average but boy did she know how to market herself.

She's So Unusal was about the same time as The First Album. SO Madge and Cyndi are comtempories.

She was on MTV in late 82 early 83 with Burning Up, mostly late at night, because MTV didn't want to play dance music. With the video for Borderline in 83 she moved to regular rotation. The Wedding Cake was in 84 and far from Madge's debut on MTV.

MADONNA (the album) kicks both of their asses.

But She's So Unusual is my pick of the two. Although I don't know what Cyndi and Madonna shows you all have been two, but in concert it's no contest. Cyndi is a bore except for her old tunes. Well, note a bore, but compared to a Madonna concert...

silverlakephil is quite right. Most people never heard of Madonna until 84/85. Even when she was filming Desperately Seeking Susan (in mid 84) people were mistaking her for Cyndi Lauper who was a much bigger star at the time.

If you like big budget productions then yeah, Madonna's your woman, but that can often be a cover for a lack of talent. This was brought home to me in 2003. Madonna appeared on Jonathan Ross, and performed in a no frills fashion. No great light show, no dancers, no choirs, just her and a band, and it sucked. She was stiff. You really saw how bad her dancing was. During American Life after the rap the audience was totally silent. You could see she knew they weren't impressed. He tried to reassure her in the interview afterwards but she knew.

Then about 3 months later, out of the blue I saw Cyndi on a chat show. I literally just turned on the TV and there was Cyndi. I hadn't seen her on UK TV for almost a decade so it was a surprise to say the least. Anyway, she also did a gimmick free performance and the contrast between her performance and Madonna's was stark. She was spinning around, belting out high notes, climbing on the piano. Totally abandoned. Her personality was jumping out of the screen. It really rekindled my interest and reminded me just what a talent she is.

Well, that's certainly true, but if I rated people just by how well they managed their career then I'd be a fan of Donald Trump.
